Titans is a superhero hybrid -- a live-action series that essentially weds the CW's DC Comics-inspired fare with the gritty, premium-cable approach... That's not a bad formula, and it yields an entertaining, heavily serialized show.

STREAM IT, especially if you're a fan of Berlanti's DC-related shows. It might be a bit darker than you like, with a bit less of a sense of humor than the others have, but it's still well done.

"Titans" borrows from police procedurals, action thrillers and teenage dramas, but it goes grayer, quieter and more psychological.

Titans might as well arrive carrying a sign that says "Ask Me About My Edginess."

Just wild and risky enough, with a surprisingly great cast, to be any fans next superhero TV obsession.

The production design looks cheap, the fight scenes perfunctory and forgettable, and Starfire is the only lead character in the initial episodes to make much of an impression at all.

While the darkness hovers, Titans seems to at least care about connecting each of the main characters.

Another superhero show is overkill, but for what it is, Titans strong-arms its way into acceptance and occasionally more.

This ain't Teen Titans Go! This isn't even Teen Titans. These are some capital-S Serious teens out to prove that they matter. And after three of the first season's 12 episodes from the doofus trifecta behind the show I'm not convinced they do.

The series features plenty of f-bombs, grisly violence and a willingness to dispose of supporting characters as if they are yesterday's newspaper. As uneven as it is, there's enough here to make you want to see how crazy it all gets.

Titans has promise, and could be the draw the DCU needs it to be, if it's going to thrive as a subscription service.
October 10, 2018
Despite its flaws, 'Titans' is a true origin story makes it feel as if we are growing into the characters with them -- and that shows that this series has potential that shouldn't be ignored.

There's surprising flavor beneath its classification as a dark, moody, teen drama.
October 8, 2018
Delivers an enjoyably bizarre genre mash-up of moody noir, psychological horror, and bloody-knuckle action.

Titans is not fun. It's relentlessly adult so much so that it's alienating, and so slow in developing the plot and bringing the characters together that it's frustrating.
October 5, 2018
The times they're apart in the first few episodes aren't nearly as interesting as when they meet, except for Starfire (Anna Diop), who lights up every scene she's in, literally, and could be the best thing about this show.

Titans is worth checking out because it's trying in earnest to be something you don't quite expect and, in a world that's being increasingly dominated by cookie cutter, live-action comic book adaptations, it stands out.

When Titans focuses on its characters and not trying to shock or scare us, it's an engaging ride - like a fledgling sidekick, it lacks discipline, but still packs a punch.

This might just be the one time where the old, hollow defense about how a movie or TV show was made "for the fans, not the critics" could actually hold water.
October 4, 2018
Titans quickly establishes itself as a unique, sometimes harrowing, and surprisingly engaging prospect. It's one that doesn't fall into the slow pacing and overwrought narratives of some "serious" comics adaptations.
