What to Know

Critics Consensus

Masterpiece Theater's rendition of Tom Jones may not find a novel way of making its titular Lothario more interesting, but his exploits remain good bawdy fun thanks to an appealing ensemble cast.

But this is a middle-of-the-road, middle-class Sunday-night period comedy that doesn’t want to make any big political points... Go to Full Review

McLeod is fine as Tom -- a bit hollow, but also endearing.... But everything around Tom -- the comically excessive costumes, the colorful side characters, the romp-like tone, the moral curlicues -- more than compensates for his blandness. Go to Full Review

There’s class and sex and money, those failsafe themes of English fiction. And there’s Hannah Waddingham as Lady Bellaston who does snobbish sneers and big hair like no one else in the business. Go to Full Review

Rachel M 03/17/2024 I have been watching masterpiece for two decades and this version of Tom Jones is probably one of the worst ones I have seen. It felt like masterpiece was abandoning it's normal feel and tone and trying to be a version of Bridgerton which it's not. If I wanted Bridgerton I would have just watch Bridgerton. I like that Masterpiece isn't like Bridgerton and I sincerely hope that future masterpiece productions will continue in the same feel and tone that they always have had before because I absolutely love masterpiece theater normally. I'm not trying to fault the actors on their acting nor the set or the costumes. That did feel like normal masterpiece quality which I always love. I will also say it was fun to see Rebecca from Ted Lasso in a masterpiece production and she did a great job. Masterpiece please stick to what you do best and I promise you will keep your faithful audience. See more Edward L @Glyndower 05/30/2023 'Reimagining' is the second-rate adaptor's excuse for thinking they are better writers than the original. A bad move when the original is Henry Fielding, one of the greats of English literature. This series is devoid of any pace, humour or sexual chemistry and is furthered hampered by the ludicrious woke casting of Sophie and her maid, played by two of the worst black British actors I have seen. Although to be fair, Shirley Henderson, playing the aunt is even worse, giving, as usual, her 'Moaning Myrtle' from 'Harry Potter' performance. How does this woman get work? The 1997 BBC series is far better while the 1963 Oscar-winning film still works well. Watch those, not this rubbish. See more Steve j @SwanseaJack 05/04/2023 A black Sophie Weston Fantastic, better than the black Anne Boleyn in my opinion, or the black Cleopatra, and the Lost Boys in Peter Somebody and Wendy, who are mostly black girls. I truly want to see Whoopi Goldberg playing Queen Elizabeth 1st, a role she was clearly born for. This is not rewriting history, it is "re-imagining it for modern audiences". Great stuff!!!! See more lorrainesilvers s 05/01/2023 The original was so great and so much fun. This paltry excuse for more diversity is just that. Created for people who like quotas and diversity where none is needed or appropriate for the story. Soooooo boring and low production values, it seems that Masterpiece label doesn't mean much anymore. See more Read all reviews
