Tommy: Season 1 (2020)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

Though Tommy at times undermines unexpected twists with predictable solutions, it's still a decent new procedural thanks to the endlessly watchable Edie Falco.

Critic Reviews for Tommy Season 1

But, sadly, despite her chops, Falco is not asked to do a lot in the script except exude principles and rock a police uniform.

Feb 7, 2020 | Full Review…

First-rate actress, compelling idea but neither can escape the clutches of a shopworn formula.

Feb 5, 2020 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

It could have been a hot mess of clunky speechifying and patronizing exposition, but while there is a bit of that, strong performances and interesting characterization make the whole thing very watchable.

May 27, 2020 | Full Review…

Tommy is in some respects as familiar as cop shows of the distant past, but freshens the formula by incorporating timely storylines, and a wry sensibility that plays to Falco's strengths.

Feb 7, 2020 | Full Review…

[The ensemble] take the sharp dialogue provided to them and spin it into enjoyable and enthralling performances that hopefully carry "Tommy" past its initial cannon bombardment of crusading.

Feb 7, 2020 | Full Review…

"Tommy" is an old sheep in new sheep's clothing, the latest twist on the cop show with a higher-ranking officer and a glass ceiling buster to separate it from other LA police dramas.

Feb 6, 2020 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

Tommy is a cut above the standard police procedural.

May 26, 2020 | Full Review…

Edie Falco is one of those actors we'll watch in anything. And Tommy certainly is anything.

Feb 7, 2020 | Full Review…

Edie Falco is just right as the first female police chief in Los Angeles in the new cop drama Tommy.

Feb 6, 2020 | Full Review…

Edie Falco is so talented that she can make this formulaic CBS cop drama watchable. She can't quite make it good, but she saves it from being bad.

Feb 5, 2020 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

Nobody's perfect, but Falco somehow makes even this flaw compelling.

Feb 5, 2020 | Full Review…

Is it as network procedurally as network procedurals get? You bet. But, sometimes that's what the audience wants.

Audience Reviews for Tommy: Season 1

Great show but Americans can't stand to see interracial couples or gay people so cbs cancelled the show. Are you crazy? I loved this show, Americans are racists... screw cbs
  • Jul 05, 2020
Sad to see this show was canceled! Love watching Edie Falco! I enjoyed seeing a strong female in charge too!
  • Jun 29, 2020
What I find disappointing about this show is that it's meant to be about a woman taking on a mans role and instead of her using her female name she insists on being called "Tommy" - to me it's telling woman you can only do a job like this if you in some form be like a man. Little sexist, and outdated views. This isn't a mans world and we don't have to emulate them to be successful in this world.

I think the show is boring. Seems like no matter what the case all she has to do is show up and recite a few everything's alright and goody-goody comments and the criminals just fold. It seems that she is just wandering around the office and City accomplishing nothing . Then again it just may be the poor scriptwriters. I liked her spot in The Sopranos but I think she's is miscast in this show . Maybe I'm just used to watching Blue Bloods.

I love how original this series is. It really portrays how Chief's have to play the political game even when it's not their specialty. It's such a shame CBS has canned it. Maybe Netflix will pick it up.

Its been cancelled.... sorry as it had great potential. I think they tried to deal with too many controversial subjects at the same time, Lesbians kissing on street and in bed, black/white marriage, mixed race daughter, female police chief of LA..... just too much at once. would like to see them tone it down a bit but continue. A surprisingly fresh take for formulaic CBS. Edie Falco is outstanding! The more the characters developed, the more invested I was. Then, today, CBS announced that it had been canceled...which, in hindsight, shouldn't have been surprising. Only formulaic series seem to survive the CBS axe. Tommy rocks, but CBS sucks all the fresh air and originality out of everything, and if they can't, they just cancel it. Often after a poorly promoted, and abreviated, first season.
  • May 05, 2020
This is good show with lots of potential. Edie Falco is a force and it could go in a lot of directions. Hopefully will get a Season 2.
  • May 03, 2020
Edie Falco again showing her great talents. The show started slow, but the last 3 episodes have raised the level of drama.
  • May 02, 2020
Just horrible, Acting was bad. Direction, Editing, and Camera angles were all bad. Edie Falco has the same expression on her face no matter what happens. A show that uses a green screen during car rides is very 80's . Give me a break, it looks so fake.
