So yeah, the length. It's not the episode duration that's the problem, but how little happens and for how long in each 60-80 minute instalment.

An aesthetic so nonchalant that every murder and rape feels like a casual shrug; a deadpan performance from Teller that would easily win a children's game of musical statues.

What's hypnotic for 100 minutes becomes an agonizing anesthetic when it's stretched out to 10-plus hours, and by slooooowwwwing everything down, Refn has robbed a potentially thrilling crime-ride of any possible vitality.

The sense that you're watching something from an auteur who somehow believes he's slumming virtually emanates from your screen.

Given an entire season to play with, Refn has gotten lost in his own stylistic excesses.

It's hard to imagine that having been served the first three episodes would have resolved my distaste for this extended bit of exposure to Refn, a filmmaker whose work has historically left me cold.

The show/13-hour movie/whatever you want to call it amounts to nothing more than a dark and brooding series of images and characters that, though as beautiful as they are surreal, are mostly empty. They're empty for a painfully long time, too.

Dimly-lit neon-drenched dreck, the two episodes I saw presented at Cannes look and feel like a bad David Lynch parody, with none of Lynch's oddities, humor, or appreciation of both the grotesque and the spiritual.

Take this for what you will, by the time the piece rolled around to the murder-porn plotline and a nameless girl buried alive in the New Mexico sands by two pornographer brothers, I was... ready to bolt.

That's a lot to unpack for a series that doesn't seem as deep as it thinks it is.

There's a difference between a filmmaker developing career-long themes and falling into a routine, and Refn's on the wrong side of that divide.
