The emotions of the standard crime procedural are revenge, regret and obligation, but China Girl operates a deeper, primal level, and it is the psychological stakes that drive these incomplete people forward.

I'm not even sure what we ended up with - a meditation on motherhood? An indictment of illegal surrogacy? An exploration of class in Australia? All or perhaps none of the above?

Nicole Kidman is Julia and is, as ever these days, terrific: combative, articulate, dangerous.

I binge-watched this season in high-wire excitement because - as with real humans - I had no idea what they were going to say or do next.

There's something resembling a satire of the white-savior complex. But the forcefulness of those condemnations gets undermined by too many other elements.

Robin butts in. It feels forced, like a puzzle the writers were trying to figure out before they gave up and just smushed two pieces together. They got the result they needed, though.

All the forced coincidences will make your eyes roll, as if Australia is some kind of tiny town where everyone just happens to be connected somehow, criminally and/or romantically.

China Girl is full of aphorisms and statements that might be profound if they weren't so nonsensical.

[Offred's character is] a heroine everyone could easily empathize with in an award-worthy way.

It would be difficult if not impossible to find so many top-notch performances in one series as you will find in China Girl.

I admire something this unafraid to risk. Something this rocky and defensive. And I wonder if anything on television has come closer to capturing an age of crude opposition.

Top of the Lake isn't among the cream of that crop. For starters, the plot hinges on strained coincidences and hackneyed relationships, and there's really not much of a mystery surrounding the central storyline.

For all of China Girl's didacticism, it has great characters, a mischievous sense of humor, grace notes.

Into this all-too-fertile feminist territory, Top of the Lake: China Girl brings the psychology and biology of motherhood.
September 7, 2017
A bold new installment that often exceeds the excellence of its predecessor, with an even more primal, taut and engrossing story that reveals new depths in its protagonist.

China Girl does what True Detective hoped to -- it is intense, disturbing and bizarre without buckling under the weight of its philosophies or politics.
September 7, 2017
Sure, there's a lot about mothering, but the actual beating heart of the series is blank acquiescence to confounding or inappropriate circumstances.
September 6, 2017
Almost everything that felt uncannily assured the first time out feels forced here.

Pregnancies, parenthood and the costs of family ties: These are the matters that Top of the Lake injects with both urgency and hope. It's a potent, and at times deeply poetic, concoction.
