For a show that dealt with themes of immortality, its death came as a sweet relief.

This new-look Torchwood has style, high drama and strong characters, and poses some chin-stroking philosophical questions.

After a while, the story becomes the equivalent of that one person on the train who can not stop telling you about how the secret conspiracy is out to get you-a rhetorical argument that devolves into paranoid and then wish-fulfilling fantasy.

I keep wanting to make 24 comparisons, from back when 24 was really exciting to watch, but it's not like Jack Bauer went around saving every human on planet Earth.

It's a solid story with some brilliant turns and some very pessimistic predictions of how the world faces a health crisis of overwhelming dimension, but it also feels stretched out beyond its natural length.

Juggling the themes of famine, fame, and family, Torchwood: Miracle Day makes a smooth transatlantic shift that will, I hope, broaden this marvelous, tense fantasy franchise's audience.

Miracle Day has a cracking good premise, a notable cast and-from the looks of it-a fatter budget. As a straight-ahead sci-fi tale, it's engrossing.

That this latest sci-fi tale doesn't fully measure up to its predecessor does little to diminish its offbeat charm.

The vote here is to not only give Torchwood: Miracle Day a chance, but to ride out the bumpy parts and put some faith in Davies' unique take on storytelling.

This British born-and-bred series also is unusual in ways that have nothing to do with the plot. Some of these are bound to strike U.S. viewers as peculiar, and not always in a good way. So be warned, but don't give up.

It aims high, and wide, and near and far, and if it doesn't hit all of its many targets, it hits several
