Transatlantic is inspired by the true story of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold and the Emergency Rescue Committee. Risking their lives to help more than 2000 refugees escape occupied France, including many artists on the Nazis’ most-wanted list, an international gang of young superheroes and their famous charges occupy a villa at the edge of the city, where the threat of mortal danger gives way to unexpected collaborations and intense love affairs.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ably dramatizing a deadly serious chapter of World War II history while also remembering to have fun, Transatlantic is a visually sumptuous throwback to classic Hollywood melodramas.

With its luscious aesthetic, slick pacing and throwback charm, Transatlantic largely delivers as entertainment. But given the subject matter, it should be so much more than that. Go to Full Review

They’ve managed to do something fresh with it—and even tossed in a little artsy levity and smoochin’, no less. Go to Full Review

While the show isn’t afraid to get as dark as its circumstances require, it’s also not afraid to embrace the occasional moment of levity, from funny misunderstandings to romantic drama to even an unexpected musical number. Go to Full Review

Created by Anna Winger ('Unorthodox') and Daniel Handler. this compelling historical saga is stylish and bittersweet - with a somewhat whimsical view of a little-known segment of history - yet far too superficial with speech-heavy dialogue. Go to Full Review

The creators have chosen to set a story of determined opposition to cruelty and authoritarianism at one of the most tragic moments in history. The series brings out some of the worst in humanity and some of its best. Go to Full Review

Fiona H @Fifi72 Dec 28 Wonderful! Rich in light and creativity it was a visual delight. Costumes, music and scenery kept me engaged. Fabulous acting by a diverse and talented cast. I didn't want to say goodbye to any of the characters. I also had no idea about Varian Fry and the rescue committee. There wasn''t an ending I had been hoping for but I guess that's the awful reality of war. See more Daniel O @Olshansk 11/04/2024 The show started with me breaking my brain as to where I know the lead female actress from. Took me a couple of episodes to realize that I used to watch Gillian Jacobs regularly in Community, during my college years, over a decade ago! She looks the same :) I watched this show with my mom because I only had 2 weeks at home and we wanted a mini-series we'll be able to finish and both enjoy. I had no expectations going into it but absolutely loved it! This show is the epitome of a dramatized reality / docuseries. It covers a tough but important topic, keeps a fast pace, has an old vibe to it, but is also filled with a lot of fun moments. There's no so much character development, but the balance of the different characters and how they fill different roles is done very well. In particular, I loved the moments when famous authors like Marc Chagall make an appearance and fill that "artist void". The whole series is very enticing, but ultimately, it's a buildup to the last episode. The last episode is a combination of love and hate, sadness and victory, trauma and healing, truth and lies. It's life. It's reality. It's a masterpiece. See more Torin F @nonlinearize 10/27/2024 TRANSATLANTIC is a limited series historical drama committed to a certain visual and period fidelity that is immediately engaging, as is the overall fact-based story. The series begins to drag a bit, however, as individual character motivations get lost amidst the hand-wringing and visa-chasing, and the narrative is spread a little thin over seven episodes. The diverse cast is generally quite good, but Gillian Jacobs seems imperfectly suited to a dramatic role here. The series is enjoyable and occasionally insightful, while leaving something to be desired and lacking the sustained wartime urgency it seems to be aiming for. See more Teresa J 08/27/2024 Focused more on the decadent lives of artists and writers who were apparently, to the producers, more worthy of being rescued out of Europe in this era than millions of other noble but poor folk. Insulting. See more David H 04/06/2024 Trite, unimagative and occasionally poorly acted See more Steve M 01/20/2024 Great cast and script... keeping history alive while greatly entertaining.
