Part of the appeal of True Blood, especially in its first few seasons, was its over-the-top shock value, often bloody and sexual in nature.

After dealing with all the hype and hubbub that came through the media with last year's soft vampire love story Twilight, it's nice to see a show that actually has some teeth to it.

A creative dramedy bolstered by both an unusual premise and strong, well-developed, colorful characters who add a touch of campy humor.

So far, True Blood isn't deep, it doesn't have the undertow of mortality and loss that made Ball's previous hit, Six Feet Under... But its take on contemporary gothic does have a knowing connection to a dark side of American life.

The show is basically one big pile of meh. Most the rest of the actors fall somewhere on the scale between "yikes" to "yawn," and most the rest of the dialogue is just as bad as the words poor Paquin is forced to spit out.

Those who enjoy a guilty pleasure of an evening, however, will likely find this a fun if over-cooked ride, a juju-laced, borderline-bonkers slab of Southern Gothic that delights in its pulpiness.

True Blood isn't meant to be an exercise in good taste. Just a romp and a wallow--and a bloody good one.

In the skilled hands of Alan Ball, the conceit allows for both deft social commentary and wry humor.

True Blood is a sexy affair that sets up an entirely believable world where humans and vampires co-exist. It's a soap, to be sure, but a soap with an eye for social commentary.

True Blood appears to be a creative experiment. Ball should at least be given the chance to prove further whether he can slay viewers with his vision.

Appetizingly pulpy and yet not at all crass, the series presents a new angle on the phenomenon of shows-so-bad-that-they're-good: It sucks hard and thus plays very well.
September 7, 2008
While the show is a trifle hokey, its soapy elements, gothic atmosphere and cliffhanger endings do reel viewers in, laying the groundwork for what may be the cultish, undemanding romp HBO needs to inject much-needed life into its lineup.

In Ball's droll, neo-gothic "True Blood," the vampire community isn't willing to roll over and accept our pity.

For now, I'm ready for more. Bring on the hot-tempered vampires!
September 7, 2008
While trying to be edgy through generous helpings of sex and gore, the show is never really sexy or scary.
September 7, 2008
The strong supporting cast can't make up for the central problems in "True Blood."
September 7, 2008
Not quite funny, not quite scary, not quite thought-provoking, the show's attempt to question the roots of prejudice is continually undermined by its own stereotyping.

It leavens fantasy romance and perverse Southern Gothic with the petty preoccupations of small-town life: "Dark Shadows" with a splash of Mayberry.
