There are all sorts of open threads tossed out in these first two episodes, some of which will undoubtedly be red herrings and some of which I'm curious about.

Episode 2 is a strong follow-up, giving the characters room to breathe and show who they really are. The bar scene becomes the most genuine and engaging moment of the episode.

Diversity is a huge plus for a show which featured six consecutive white leads prior to Season 3, and Ali is already showing what kind of added nuance his perspective can bring to the series.

This second installment has a few brief moments of levity, and they are all welcome.

If "True Detective" sticks to form, the culprit may be unmasked eventually, but the search itself will unleash forces that are much bigger and more difficult to comprehend.

Obviously, the show has to trickle out answers over eight episodes, so this one focuses more on Detective Hays' (Mahershala Ali) personal life than the mystery, which is fine.

The second episode, Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, does some great character work and further expands the narrative and central mystery, and in its own terms it is a solid episode.

After a relatively fast-paced opening episode, "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" settles into a familiar, meditative groove - one that works here but doesn't necessarily bode well for the future if upcoming episodes stay in the same gear.

True Detective continues to bring the most suspenseful parts of the three timelines with pincers pulling the edges together with a rough but steady precision. The second entry, "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye," is still underplaying the tension.

Mahershala Ali's performance lends the first two episodes a grace and gravity far beyond what it's earned

After starting the season with an intriguing mystery, the HBO series slows down and takes a step back.

The second episode spends a great deal of time running in place.
