Even without the grief mustache, Scoot is compelling as hell!

If You Have Ghosts, True Detective season 3's fifth and best episode to date, provided us with an enormous amount of evidence (and more literary allusions) to dig through.

"If You Have Ghosts" shows some characters unable to let go of things, even if it's to their detriment. Some things are best left to the past, and in this episode, the present finds itself the most powerful by trying to forget that past.

Such moments forgive a lot, and if the solution to the mystery proves worth the wait, that will forgive even more. But we've got a ways to go before we get there, and the terrain is starting to get a little too bumpy for comfort.

Some things are becoming more clear, some things are a little murkier, some things were just hard to watch.

The bounty of clues and disclosures this week do much to counteract the continued friction between Hays and Amelia, which repeats itself from last week.

If there's any mystery left in True Detective that matters, it's the mystery of how it becomes us, and how to reconcile the many versions of us. In "If You Have Ghosts," True Detective loses sight of its core mystery.

Ali and Dorff absolutely kill it; the affection and the pain and the loneliness just roll off of them both.

If You Have Ghosts may be the most well rounded of the season's episodes. It is at turns heartbreaking and heart-stopping. It plows some very deep pain, but closes with the biggest shot of hope the series has yet offered.

Rich with information, filled with stunning performances, and paced well between revealing personal confrontations and critical developments in the case, Episode 5 delivers everything viewers could want from the series.
