Critic Consensus: Though the final scene of True Detective's "Down Will Come" was spectacular, the events hardly felt earned after a brooding, clunky hour of storytelling.

Critic reviews for Down Will Come
Did this whole thing need a shot in the arm? Maybe. I just don't know if it has earned thousands of them.
The final 10 minutes of continuous action were a welcome respite from a dialogue-heavy but still engaging first 45 minutes.
True Detective is frequently a slog. Yet afterwards you can find it occupying your thoughts, scenes you didn't necessarily enjoy in the moment acquiring a peculiarly haunting afterglow.
I feel as though the show has declined episode by episode since the start of the season and tonight was the episode in which, for me at least, it really went over the edge.
There was a lot of noise, and smoke, and bullets and yelling. People died, blood was splattered. Cars and busses crashed and I get that we, the audience, are supposed to be hanging in suspense for all of it but I just...cant?
