It's all predictable and remote light fare.

The show is not deep, it's not even a new concept. However, the loveable actors make it thoroughly enjoyable.

His (Idris Elba) attempt at TV, however, is not so bad and it was cool to see him using London slang.

Because the situation is so absurd, there's a humor that comes through. And I particularly like the characters.

Someone just make him Bond already and we can let this be the forgettable show it was destined to be.

It's perfectly amusing.

Extra-lovable actors make a cliched storyline funny, sweet.

It's madcap and zany to the point of being unhinged, but it has its moments of hilarious silliness.

Turn Up Charlie is a kind of TV-comedy mosaic: chunks and shards of sitcom commonplaces are spackled together by moments of sincerity.
March 19, 2019
Idris Elba is the main draw to this show, but there are a plethora of other reasons to enjoy it. The music is one of those things.

Idris Elba co-creates, and stars in, a charming-but-flawed Netflix series about a struggling DJ who becomes a nanny.

Turn Up Charlie doesn't demand much from its audience or cast, even as it remains pretty watchable
March 18, 2019
Turn Up Charlie isn't the worst idea for a Netflix series, far from it. Nor is Elba's attempt to create a high-profile outlet for his personal music career.
March 18, 2019
He's just not funny. Elba's considerable skills in projecting menace and resolve don't come into play and he mostly just looks genial and a little lost.
March 18, 2019
Sometimes a routine comedic story can be truly funny, but "Turn Up Charlie" falls flat when it should be a total rave up.
March 18, 2019
There's some light relief in throwback references to Charlie's Nigerian roots - Jocelyn Jee Esien as Aunt Lydia is a scene-stealer - but for the most part Turn Up Charlie is a turn-off.

Beyond the impressive alchemy of the cast, the show is half-baked. It's more of a collection of developed character studies than a cohesive, well-paced narrative.
March 15, 2019
It'll remind you that Elba can be a good comedic actor when given the right material.

Look, this isn't a great show, but it's well-directed and has a couple of key virtues. The bottom line is that it's really never a chore to watch Idris Elba be cool & charming

Turn Up Charlie is, at best, a half-baked series... is also, at worst, a waste of Idris Elba and Piper Perabo's time and talents.
