The show is not deep, it's not even a new concept. However, the loveable actors make it thoroughly enjoyable.

His (Idris Elba) attempt at TV, however, is not so bad and it was cool to see him using London slang.

Because the situation is so absurd, there's a humor that comes through. And I particularly like the characters.

It's perfectly amusing.

Extra-lovable actors make a cliched storyline funny, sweet.

It's madcap and zany to the point of being unhinged, but it has its moments of hilarious silliness.

Turn Up Charlie is a kind of TV-comedy mosaic: chunks and shards of sitcom commonplaces are spackled together by moments of sincerity.

Idris Elba is the main draw to this show, but there are a plethora of other reasons to enjoy it. The music is one of those things.

Idris Elba co-creates, and stars in, a charming-but-flawed Netflix series about a struggling DJ who becomes a nanny.

Turn Up Charlie doesn't demand much from its audience or cast, even as it remains pretty watchable
March 18, 2019
Turn Up Charlie isn't the worst idea for a Netflix series, far from it. Nor is Elba's attempt to create a high-profile outlet for his personal music career.
March 15, 2019
Beyond the impressive alchemy of the cast, the show is half-baked. It's more of a collection of developed character studies than a cohesive, well-paced narrative.

It'll remind you that Elba can be a good comedic actor when given the right material.

Look, this isn't a great show, but it's well-directed and has a couple of key virtues. The bottom line is that it's really never a chore to watch Idris Elba be cool & charming

What we have in "Turn Up Charlie" is an amiable, ambling, eagerly conventional, fairly superficial comedy, not hard to watch, although much longer than it needs to be.
March 15, 2019
This is sweet and bracing good fun, it's entertaining and hey, its Idris Elba.

Turn Up Charlie plays like an engrossing screwball battle of wits between the DJ and his 12-year-old charge, a cruel Gen Z spawn from Hell played by an extraordinary child newcomer, Frankie Hervey.

If Turn Up Charlie never fully catches fire, exactly, it crackles along quite pleasantly - evolving, over the course of eight episodes, into something a lot more tangled and interesting than its initial premise suggests.

Idris, a keen DJ himself under the name Driis, milks much humour from Charlie's "old man" persona in the digital playground of modern beats.

The incongruity of the whole thing, watching the Sexiest Man Alivethis link opens in a new tab whisper-bicker with a curly-haired moppet, is part of Turn Up Charlie's appeal. And to be honest, I'd probably see that movie. In the theater.
