Because the situation is so absurd, there's a humor that comes through. And I particularly like the characters.

It's madcap and zany to the point of being unhinged, but it has its moments of hilarious silliness.

Turn Up Charlie is a kind of TV-comedy mosaic: chunks and shards of sitcom commonplaces are spackled together by moments of sincerity.

He's just not funny. Elba's considerable skills in projecting menace and resolve don't come into play and he mostly just looks genial and a little lost.

Look, this isn't a great show, but it's well-directed and has a couple of key virtues. The bottom line is that it's really never a chore to watch Idris Elba be cool & charming

Turn Up Charlie is, at best, a half-baked series... is also, at worst, a waste of Idris Elba and Piper Perabo's time and talents.

What we have in "Turn Up Charlie" is an amiable, ambling, eagerly conventional, fairly superficial comedy, not hard to watch, although much longer than it needs to be.

Though it can be binge-watched painlessly enough,... Turn Up Charlie is such a disassembled example of a "Welcome to my world" TV show that it ought to come with its own Allen wrench.

Turn Up Charlie plays like an engrossing screwball battle of wits between the DJ and his 12-year-old charge, a cruel Gen Z spawn from Hell played by an extraordinary child newcomer, Frankie Hervey.

Elba has a nice rapport with all of his co-stars, Hervey in particular, but the whole thing just left me wanting to see Elba demonstrate his chops in a better-written comedy.

While the show is breezy and mildly pleasant, in a less profligate streaming-TV environment the logical move would have been to turn down Charlie.

The frankly painful new series - it can't decide if it's a sitcom, comedy-drama or children's soap.

The show pulls in too many directions at once, many of them far removed from the sporadic charm of its concept.

Turn Up Charlie is let down by writing and characterisation that render the whole thing a chore.

How do you botch anything starring Idris Elba?
March 9, 2019
Idris, a keen DJ himself under the name Driis, milks much humour from Charlie's "old man" persona in the digital playground of modern beats.

Its plots get lost in big set pieces and interpersonal DJ drama that's nowhere near as interesting as the show wants it to be.
March 5, 2019
The incongruity of the whole thing, watching the Sexiest Man Alivethis link opens in a new tab whisper-bicker with a curly-haired moppet, is part of Turn Up Charlie's appeal. And to be honest, I'd probably see that movie. In the theater.

It's frustrating to see an artist with such ambition settle for something so elementary. It's harmless, sure, but it's also inconsequential and unkempt.
