"Part 8" adds yet another masterful chapter to Twin Peaks' return -- and arguably one of the finest hours of creator David Lynch's incredible career.
There's one thing that can't be argued: You've never seen this before on television.
This destructive, almost apocalyptic display was the latest and most extreme reminder that nothing is too out there for him.
David Lynch's The Tree of Life. That's what I scribbled in my notes as episode eight of Twin Peaks: The Return slipped its skin over my television like a diseased membrane.
David Lynch has unearthed something -- unlocked it... His films are often terrifying. Twin Peaks has been terrifying. Still, I've never witnessed anything quite like what Lynch gave us in "Part 8" of The Return.
Episode 8 of the revival in particular goes beyond television or even cinema -- it is one mad flow about our civilization's communion with dark forces to unleash absolute destruction.
It is convolution as ultradramatic storytelling and a genuinely radical example of arthouse sensibility overwhelming television convention.
We can't lose sight of the fact that most of episode 8 left us mouth agape; not just as it was happening, but for several hours afterward.
It's easy to say that there's never been anything quite like this episode on any motion picture screen.
It's a pretty astonishing 60 minutes of television, and unless I've been taking my own wine pairing guide too seriously, we just got a whole crap-ton of BOB backstory.
"Gotta Light?" is pure art, and Showtime has allowed Lynch and Frost the creative freedom to express their vision. Somehow, it ties into the Twin Peaks mythology, and hopefully it will all make sense to us in coming weeks.
