As a creaky, unusually violent and grandiose soap, Tyrant kind of works. But as a piece of revolutionary television, it's a failed state.

If The Honourable Woman was a crossword without clues, this is more like a shopping list scrawled in felt pen.

Some ambitious but flawed dramas get better the more you watch. Tyrant is not one of them.

An intriguing yet ultimately flawed final product that, for most critics at least, plays like a very expensive mistake.

It's tough to assume fruit will bare when so many of the show's characters are written so poorly.

[The] viewers get a family soap opera masquerading as something more; a gritty fairy tale in which the Americanized characters are the most virtuous and figures regularly act in ways that make little sense beyond furthering the story.

Events in the first episode - which include some graphic violence and not one but two disturbing rape scenes - moved along quickly enough to keep me involved. Unfortunately, subsequent episodes left me less enthusiastic about the whole ordeal.

We're immediately stuck with a premise we're forced to believe not because it makes sense but because it makes sense for the show.

Tyrant is just offensively boring.
June 25, 2014
The story doesn't just feel like a deliberate homage to The Godfather; it feels like an uninspired mash-up of several prominent television tropes from the last 15 years or so.
June 25, 2014
It's surprising to me that this ever got past the development stage, because nothing about Tyrant truly works. It's a halting, strained hodgepodge that ends up being an awkward mixture of bland and offensive.

It's intriguing to watch such a familiar story in a setting so foreign to most of us, but the political realities raised by the show are oversimplified and unnuanced, Arab Spring 101.

It's as if nobody sat down and thought about how ridiculous this story is before presenting it as a very serious tale.

The creators of Tyrant seem so concerned with politics, pageantry and preconceptions they forgot the most important thing: People.
June 24, 2014
Nothing could seem less appetizing at the moment than a clumsily written and stultifyingly acted TV drama stocked with tired and terribly broad notions of Muslim culture in a make-believe nation on the brink.

The first episode of Tyrant... is both exotic (the cultural elements surrounding the wedding are fascinating) and unfortunately trite, to the point of embracing stereotypes about the Middle East that some early viewers have found offensive.

June 24, 2014
The plotting is obvious, the characters broadly and shallowly drawn, and authenticity evaporates the moment you realize everyone in this land is speaking in clipped Faux-rabian British accents like out of some '40s melodrama.
June 24, 2014
It promises to explore another world, but instead it's like a tour from inside a speeding limo, the air-conditioning blasting, the tinted windows rolled up.
June 24, 2014
In Tyrant, the antihero steps out onto the front page, and then, as front pages tend to do, lies a little flat.
June 24, 2014
Stuffed to the gills with soapy family psychodrama and syrupy political intrigue, Tyrant simply has no room for the detail and care necessary to get a story like this right.
