What to Know

Critics Consensus

Unchosen may get lost in its character-driven thrill ride orbit too long to rein in its more melodramatic tendencies, but it recovers well enough to deliver an entertaining roller coaster of emotions.

The narrative moves quickly, sometimes stretching the plot's plausibility, but Windsor is a worthy anchor as a young woman reappraising everything she believes about the wider world and her possible place in it. Go to Full Review

Unchosen could have been a strong drama about one woman’s attempts to break away from a religious community... But Unchosen heads into weak thriller territory, complete with a car chase and a silly kidnap. Go to Full Review

While strong performances and an eerie atmosphere keep it engaging, uneven pacing and predictable storytelling prevent it from reaching its full potential. Go to Full Review

Despite [its] obvious limitations, the series succeeds thanks to the performances. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

While its themes of personal freedom and resistance are clear, the storytelling doesn't always bring new depth to the "cult escape" tropes, instead relying on exploitation rather than nuance. Go to Full Review

Gargantua P @Geulah26 5d Like a true horror story, this tale has a fitting end. Those who criticised it perhaps missed the direction the series had taken. The beginning felt almost dull, with cardboard characters and deja vu situations and cult trite hypocrisy. But so much was yet to come, keeping me on the edge of my seat and guessing. The criticism of lack of character development or mediocre acting also seems to have missed the point. There was plenty, and at least two scenes that floored me with their poignancy and depth. Perhaps the criticism of plot holes has some merit, but these, whatever they are, didn't deter from a feeling that the whole was still larger than the sum of the parts. Finally, the testimony commentary by one former cult member of the cult these series based itself on, saying Unchosen depicted the cult to perfection , gives it quasi documentary credibility. See more Ida P @Idasp Jun 19 I enjoyed this show, but the first couple of episodes were the best. I really don't understand all the bad ratings, but some of them probably made by cult members or the religious like who can't handle criticism. I found it interesting how a former member of the PBCC identified this to be the inspiration for the setting. See more Zach M @RT09431760 Jun 8 What should be one of the easiest types of stories to write, quickly becomes a total waste of time. From the first episode on the plot gets weaker as the show moves along, sometimes even forgetting its own plotlines. One of the worst endings I’ve seen in a long time as well. See more Cata S @RT10388735 Jun 2 Terrible acting. Plot has too many unnecessary things going on. See more Hoel S. @Dsbd123 May 17 So predictable and the plot was terrible. Don’t waste your time. See more Steve M @RT74367473 May 15 I't like I have seen this before. Cult movies are a dime a dozen now. Why not do a cult movie about the fascist government we have now. MAGA is a CULT. Trump is a CULT. Stop doing fluff like this and go to the real cults in America today. See more Read all reviews
