Undercovers: Season 1 Reviews

J.J. Abrams' "Undercovers" is a woebegone spy drama with nary a hint of intelligence. Call it "The Quantum of Stupor."

I've never been so disappointed in an offering bearing the name J. J. Abrams until now. I can only hope that something changes, and soon. Otherwise Undercovers will find itself over and out.

In reality, "Undercovers" is disappointing. There's potential there for a fun show, but when Abrams is co-writing (with Josh Reims) and directing... you expect more than potential.

But it's still missing the mark for me because it's just not particularly well-executed as a spy thriller.

Overall, Undercovers is adequate, well-made, well-cast, but so suffocatingly middle-of-the-road and afraid to take any risks that it'll bore most of its audience.

For those that tune in, you won't see any groundbreaking television or sub-plots hinting that there's something "larger" going other than what's being shown - what you see is what you get.

Feels a bit undercooked.

Fun to watch but rather forgettable, because the stakes just don't feel all that high.

If only their show didn't feel so flat.

At times witty and always good-looking, Undercovers needs to figure out how to balance its serious, silly, and gimmicky inclinations.

Undercovers is watchable only because of its stars, whose chemistry recalls the fonder days of "Hart to Hart"-style high jinks.
September 30, 2010
The series also feels redundant and only on NBC's schedule because of its pedigree -- JJ Abrams ("Lost," "Star Trek").
September 30, 2010
It is all a little too casual and humorous to be convincing.

It's light but predictable fun.

What's missing is a stronger supporting cast and the right narrative vehicle for their adventures.

The banter between the Blooms is so full of cloying sugar substitutes and so devoid of any real tension that there is no voyeuristic thrill to be had.
September 30, 2010
"Undercovers" in some respects mirrors the initial problem with the central duo's relationship -- comfortable, perhaps, but failing to spark the kind of passion necessary to elicit fidelity from viewers.
September 30, 2010
It feels more like a trip to nowhere.

Abrams and company, including Kodjoe and Mbatha-Raw, who possess chemistry but lack sufficient charm and delivery, must find some way to jump-start this misfire before it fades into obscurity.

"Undercovers" is so content to lapse into genre conventions, that it feels complacent and banal.
