The show’s slow-burn, deep-dive approach doesn’t work when it’s chopped up into chapters that unfold over a month-plus. This time out, I had the benefit of binging all six episodes, and that works to the show’s benefit. Go to Full Review

The beauty of this drama is the way it allows us to emotionally invest in both police and suspects. Go to Full Review

Chris Lang has done a clever thing. Knowing that most of the audience, and all of the team at Bishop Street station, think that Cassie is irreplaceable, Lang hasn’t attempted a like-for-like swap. Go to Full Review

jimmer s @RT84670788 Sep 30 I am a fan of this series. But the changes in the cast were not particularly successful. This season’s story line was weakly constructed and full of unsympathetic characters. It seems the writers sacrificed pace and story integrity to try and make political statements about the British welfare state and social class. I think you could skip this season unless you are desperate. Not terrible but a step down from previous seasons. See more Linda W @RT15964962 Sep 7 It is just so morose! The new replacement is too unemotional. See more Rachel F @RT92875633 02/13/2025 I am not connecting well with Nicola Walker’s replacement unfortunately. I am finding series 5 difficult to stay interested in. Such a shame they they had to kill off Nicola Walker’s character :( See more andyth55 T @AndyTh55 01/11/2025 The most disappointing of all the 5 series. Apart from the loss of the excellent Nicola Walker, this series lacked any real feel to it and the plot, thought promising, just became a bit disjointed in the end and the final episode was a real disappointment. Hopefully Series 6 will be back to form. See more rashid W @RW2021 10/28/2024 Terrible fall from good TV. New lead just doesn’t work. Story not that interesting of a story. Very pedestrian. Lots more WokeyCokey. What a way to muller a OK TV series. Just really don’t care about any of these characters. See more Matthew O @RT66192923 10/13/2024 I enjoyed the first 4 seasons greatly, but found this season quite lacking. The acting is generally good, but let down by poor writing. The investigation plot is pretty good with plenty of twists and turns, but becomes increasingly heavy-handed with political commentary. The investigation reveals a sorry tale of inter-generational violence and substance abuse. Most of this gets blamed on lack of government support and resources, or oppression of the poor by the rich. Every opportunity is taken to bemoan funding cuts and point the finger at conservative politics. The conclusion of the mystery is moderately satisfying, but leaves some unanswered questions. The personal plotlines are the weakest points of this series. The two main detectives display a masterclass in poor communication with their partners. Sunny in particular shows a jarring lack of basic emotional intelligence which makes watching the scenes between him and his partner painful and immersion-breaking. This is completely inconsistent with his character in the investigation. There is no real conclusion to this plotline, it is simply left unresolved halfway through. This is especially frustrating given the development of his story across the preceding seasons. DCI James' personal plotline is better, but not great. Though the writing and acting here are more believable, she and her husband never manage to have an actual conversation where both sides communicate and listen and without one storming off halfway through. There is just enough of a conclusion to not leave this thread completely hanging, but it is hardly satisfying. The two non-detective characters explored most thoroughly are Lord Hume and Bele Falade. There is potential set up here for interesting comparisons and contrasts. In the end however, Bele faces no consequences for her manipulation and abuse, despite making no apparent effort to change, instead blaming all of her actions on others. By contrast, Lord Hume takes the fall not only for his own evil actions, but for things he is not guilty of as well, despite his seemingly genuine attempts to rectify some of the wrong he has done. It seems that what matters in the end is not how one responds to one's own wrongdoing, but whether one is a poor victim or a rich oppressor. Bele the victim can ultimately do no wrong, and Hume the oppressor can ultimately have no forgiveness. By the end of the series, none of the major characters come off well or are likeable. There is not even the satisfaction of seeing justice done. Overall, where there some good elements, this is a disappointing series. See more Read all reviews
