Explaining to her new friends in Berlin why she fled, Esty says: "God expected too much of me. Now I need to find my own path." The tension and the joy in this excellent series is watching her do it. Go to Full Review

I am recommending the German miniseries "Unorthodox" despite the fact that I found the show structurally uneven. Go to Full Review

What I really appreciate about Gambale's approach to the score in Unorthodox is not feeling manipulated and intruded upon, as many other composers might approach this. Go to Full Review

A unique and intriguing coming-of-age tale, a thoughtful thriller, and an eye-opening but always careful and respectful look at a culture that's rarely depicted on-screen in such depth. Go to Full Review

Fiona H @Fifi72 Dec 24 Incredible acting by Shira, This was amazing!! Loved it! See more Nashville I. @Nshvlleindie Jul 17 Unorthodox is a pure force of drama and and a heartpounding fight, similar to the willpower from Chernobyl or Six Feet Under. It’s criminal this series had been forgotten…a dignified and fascinating look at a part of life unknown to many. Educational, harrowing, and breathtaking. See more David F 12/23/2024 Unorthodox is a terrific drama. It's been nominated for a lot of awards. It's the story of an Chasidic family in New York City, and in particular a young wife who runs away from the community to find a new life in Berlin. What I liked was the attention to detail in the portrayal of the Satnar sect, and the way that music was shown as a way of granting us all a measure of freedom. Israeli actors Shira Haas and Amit Rahav give very sympathetic portrayals of the young couple at the centre of the story (it would have been easy to show him as a cruel patriarch, but really, he's just as Iost as she is). Highly recommended. See more T B 10/12/2022 Gripping from start to finish. Shira Haas' Emmy-nominated performance is extraordinary, and that of the two male (supporting) leads is convincing and moving, playing two men torn in different ways by their devotion and their attraction towards the dark & light of the secular world. Anyone who has gone tentatively into an arranged marriage, let alone one arranged by a closed community, can relate to the choice of sacrificing the familiarity of life with loved ones on the inside, no matter how restrictive and abusive, for the terrifying, redemptive freedom and fulfillment of the 'outside'. Sometimes, it turns out, God / Love / Happiness is not in the original place we were unconditionally assured by those we trust, that we would find it. See more Ahmed E 07/14/2022 Unorthodox has got a story that I didn't see before, very detail oriented with the way ultra-orthodox people live. But events itself may have been better as I didn't get invested with the stars in the show because its like someone telling you facts without knowing the reasons and inner feelings of these facts See more 05/05/2022 Riveting and enthralling! It's 03:45 and I just watched all of the miniseries in one go. The whole package is courageous, honest, beautiful, inspirational and full of hope and determination. It didn't hurt that the story is half set in my favourite city in the world - seductive Berlin. I will read the book this weekend. If you're looking for a story to fall into completely, this could well be it! See more Read all reviews
