Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. Reviews

In an ensemble this solid, it can be challenging for one performance to emerge as a standout.

Unsolved does subtly show us how the life and times of Biggie and Tupac have seeped into our public consciousness over the years. Their untimely deaths have turned them into unexpected martyrs whose ghetto gospel many now revere as canon.

With compassion and respect for the victims of these crimes, they explore what may have happened, and the results are intriguing, especially if you've followed the case over the decades.

Unsolved is regularly tripped up by the sheer complexity of the tale it's trying to tell, but there's a winning energy about it that kept me watching.

The absence of justice crackles with real-world energy, but the show lacks a dramatic center, cycling through musical-biopic hagiography and procedural-miniseries dullness...In attempting to tell a sprawling story, the producers have overstretched.

Why is it so hard to make a good movie about Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.? ... Unsolved is only interested in Biggie and Tupac as victims, not people-and certainly not as artists.

Unsolved isn't all that it could be or enough of what it should be.

At its core, this is a murder mystery, but set in a world that's also still a mystery to many. Check it out -- on the USA network of all places.

Watching these lawmen ply their trade is interesting, but there's a stiffness to all this, perhaps because of the auspices and what we still don't know.
February 26, 2018
Unsolved is equal parts appealingly pulpy and workmanlike, sometimes paced like a procedural and sometimes like a prestige drama.
February 26, 2018
... a compelling success, especially once you get past a clunky first episode that is burdened with expository dialogue and confusing swerves on a narrative timeline that spans two decades.
February 26, 2018
The Tupac/Biggie scenes are disproportionately glutted with the rough dialogue because they don't have what ought to be the entire show's spine. There's basically no Tupac or Biggie music to be heard in the whole series.

Irresolution has its own undeniable power and Hemingway has wisely played the strongest hand he holds. If no one can figure these murders out, that's a good yarn by itself.

The performances here are uniformly strong and the mystery around these two murders remains fascinating all these years later.

Long and Hemingway take a lot of chances with Unsolved, and sometimes come dangerously close to confusing their audience. But their collective drive pays off.
