Though Upload at times suffers from tonal overload, witty writing and a winsome cast make it an afterlife worth living.

Critic Reviews for Upload Season 1

All Critics (55) | Top Critics (21)

I love Upload because it's so smart, so funny and so imaginatively complicated.

What little spark there is, either in friendship or the tiny embers of romance sprinkled throughout, just isn't all that connected to the high concept ideas at its premise.

Top Critic

At least over the first 8 of the 10 Upload episodes, those larger ideas are submerged in mediocre plotting, strained comic antics and a sleep-inducing romance.

Where the show excels is in playing out its premise at length, and in depth.

"Upload" is very much its own thing, and a good thing at that.

Apr 30, 2020 | Full Review…

The ideas are superficial, the performances are mostly bland, and the plotting is frustrating. Worst of all, it's just not that funny.

Apr 30, 2020 | Full Review…

The people of 'Upload' are technologically advanced enough to transfer a person's conscience into an online world. Their memories and personalities are uploaded into a body where they are able to live for as long as they choose.

Jul 4, 2020 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Upload is much more than a joke about the bleak future of humanity and technology's grip on society. It is also a commentary about what people are willing to accept before they are forced to make a change.

Jun 26, 2020 | Rating: B | Full Review…

The charm never really wears off, because the show plays out like a hybrid of parodying the future while simultaneously marvelling at it...

Jun 24, 2020 | Full Review…

Plot aside, what keeps Upload delightful is its quick wit and ability to surprise.

May 29, 2020 | Full Review…

Amazon Video's Upload is funny, creative, and even complicated at times. A love-story and a murder mystery rolled into one, what more could you want?

May 22, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Despite being a story set in the afterlife tackling themes of capitalism and loss of privacy, Upload is at heart deeply human and deeply funny.

I liked it. I especially enjoyed the chemistry between the 2 main characters and the premise is sci-fi and scary. You can choose to never die (if your loved ones can afford it). Can't wait to see what happens in season 2.

I love having a series where there is generally lots of good character interactions. And although people die it isn't dark. Loads of novel ideas and attention to detail about what tech can exist in the future and how it might be.

A unique, well made show! Nice, crisp, short season, funny and touching! An interesting set of characters! Andy Allo is a charming find and makes a solid female lead! Ingrid is good characterisation with equal amounts of black and white! Its ended on an interesting note and I look forward to a solid S2

I wasn't sure if the creators would have enough ideas to make it to the end of the season and still be good. I'd say they succeeded, I was really impressed by the high quality of the writing and hope they can keep up the good work in Season 2. Funny and thought provoking SciFi, likeable characters and engaging situations, a brilliant combination.

i love this show its based on tech and after life. but when it ended i was sad and cried for 5 weeks and almost flooded the house (not lying). but then i remembered that the show doesn't end there. but the new episodes won't be coming out for a while. so then i cried for another month and almost started a flash flood (still not lying). so i would recommend to a nearby solar system and some aliens who like tech and afterlife.😣😣😮😑😁😀😀👌👌😊😭😭😭

Just binged watch the first season. Unique story line. Characters are fun and engaging. I am looking forward to watching the second season.
  • Jun 23, 2020
Nothing new. Twist at the end is not that great either. Same old strory with non realistic romance.
  • Jun 23, 2020
Disappointing. It's trying too hard to be the new Good Place. It has some brilliant ideas, but suffers from lacklustre, sometimes lazy, writing, as well as a poor casting choice for the lead role (and some important side roles). It does have room to grow and improve, but it would have to do a lot to overcome the lack of charisma in the lead role.

the first 2 to 3 episodes drag a bit and it sets up the universe of upload, but you may not be able to stop watching and want more after that to the end of season 1. I wish I did not have to wait to see what happens next.

Two episodes in, and I like the show. Acting is top-notch, and the idea is very Black Mirror, I think this is using San Junipero as the base idea, and it does it well. It has some heart, some laughs, and good characters. This is worth a watch.
