Upstairs Downstairs: Season 1 (1971 - 1972)

Critic Consensus: An update of the classic series, this edition of Upstairs, Downstairs isn't quite as riotous as the original, but it still outshines most of its contemporaries.

Tv Season Info

The first season of the popular BBC drama "Upstairs Downstairs" introduces us to the aristocratic Bellamy family and the servants who tend them. Set in a large townhouse in Edwardian London, 165 Eaton Place is revealed to be the scene of scandal, heartbreak and class division across the first 13 episodes. As Lady Marjorie embarks on an affair, her daughter Elisabeth returns from boarding school and straight into the arms of a liberal poet. This new, more mild "Upstairs Downstairs"is a three-part epilogue that feels more like an unfinished afterthought.

We're ostensibly supposed to see Eaton Place as a warm haven holding out against the cold wind of history, but a show built around the humanity of strangers would be more convincing if the characters displayed more humanness.
