What to Know

Critics Consensus

Van Der Walk's adherence to familiar tropes doesn't distinguish it from other procedurals, but Marc Warren's curmudgeonly performance as the titular detective gives proceedings some panache.

It's very witty, this series, with a dollop of dark humour thrown into the police-procedural storylines. Go to Full Review

It was a classy, well-written two hours, with Warren very much the life force holding it together. Go to Full Review

The world wasn't crying out for a Van Der Valk remake, but we seem to have an insatiable desire for detective dramas, and there was enough here -- just -- to justify its existence. Go to Full Review

Filmed with a mostly British (meaning superb) supporting cast, and thoroughly utilizing the sights, sounds, canals, coffee houses and museums of this great city. Go to Full Review

I'm especially fond of the preppy rookie, Job Cloovers (Elliot Barnes-Worrell), an inexperienced know-it-all who keeps trying to impress his blunt boss with arcane information and eureka-style breakthroughs. Go to Full Review

The strange case of all these Brits working in the Dutch police force was the least of the show's problems. Go to Full Review

Ittay1 S @Ittay11 Dec 5 A bizzare / bad taste, reliabilty / authenticity-smashing piece. MAJOR TURNOFF for me. Why would the makers portray an Amsterdam cop named Van der Valk and everyone else in Amsterdam, as speaking UK English with heavy British accents and slang ("innit?" as in "isn't it?|) ???!!! Are we supposed to relate to the characters at all? The creators seem to view film making as just throwing in some decent ingredients, never minding how the mixture feels! Or do they think they're like Shakespeare? (who made Danish characters speak literary English :-) ? See more tim h @TimHarrison Nov 10 The charismatic yet alouf at times Marc Warren is at his intriguing best in this Amsterdam set crime series. Captivating and engaging throughout, his ability to keep viewers guessing through what is at times a minimalistic plot, is simply good character acting. A solid switch off for those seeking an alternative to traditional Uk crime shows. Recommend See more Aly L @RT93882986 01/11/2025 It’s sweet and a little bit bitter. Edgy, funny and a bit melodramatic. Just a little bit. Problems raised here overlap with those of the “Bridge” at some points. But touched, solved and handled differently. Views of Amsterdam and Piet’s boat are gorgeous! She, the boat, is the lady! There is a lot of interpersonal and sexual tension here. Shame that the characters know no relief, but it holds your attention for sure. See more marina b @RT10627441 11/16/2024 We're watching now (rerun in Belgium) and I like it. It's a pleasure to watch it again. See more Sam F @CharlesHarris 03/25/2024 I remember watching the orginal series as a child. this one however does roll better through the pixels ! better acting better storylines and the scenery is fab! See more John M @RT49441586 08/27/2022 I enjoyed the first episode of the new series but felt it hadn't quite found its way. Connection with the characters seemed to lack spontaneity and the plot was fair but not necessarily totally convincing. The second instalment was far more involving with regard to storyline and an affinity to the protagonists provided a considerable enticement to watch the next episode. For me the final episode was outstanding. The subject matter was challenging and I found myself on edge and engrossed. Surely good enough to commission a third series I hope.
