Critic Reviews for Veep Season 5

All Critics (36) | Top Critics (12)

I'm not willing to say that Veep is as "funny as it's ever been" but it's still much funnier than most things on TV.

Every year, it has seemed like Veep wouldn't be able to top itself, but the innovative and unrelenting comedy just kept doing it anyway, every year, without fail.

Hilarious, as always, and unexpectedly, maybe an instructional guide to the current political landscape.

Led by Louis-Dreyfus at the height of her powers, this is a show that makes palate-cleansers of the bare-knuckled, real-life characters trying to gouge and kick their way into the Oval Office. But it's OK. Go ahead and laugh.

The familiar cast of gargoyles have retained an obsession with the rectal that reeks of the 18th century, but also of the production line: jokes manufactured with machine-tooled efficiency.

The season finale is a shocker, with series regulars on the outs and new people ending up being in.

Aug 12, 2019 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

Right now when politics seem to be filled with more despair than usual, laughing an incompetent president without fearing real world consequences offers a bit of catharsis.

It remains one of the funniest shows on television, but for myself, there has to be more to the story being told.

Veep is still at a high level of excellence. [Full Review in Spanish]

Jul 11, 2018 | Full Review…

The ugly truths of Veep's fifth season shine bright, and it's more uncomfortable to watch than ever.

Jun 27, 2018 | Full Review…

It's an amazing combination of humor and emotion achieved in the last episode, which launches Veep in a new direction and ends with an automatic desire to know more about the new life of Selina Meyer and her team. [Full review in Spanish]

What separates this comedy from others is that this HBO show isn't afraid to try new things and expand its universe.

Audience Reviews for Veep: Season 5

  • Oct 09, 2019
A satire dripping with acid wit, supported by an elaborate ensemble of infectious chemistry. Although she may have lost her presidency, VEEP's fifth season sees the series at its most thoughtful, thematically potent, and most of all, pain stakingly hilarious. I mean you know you're the best comedy on television when Jonah Ryan is in congress!

Clever, funny, and quick. Best joke per minute on TV. JLD is awesome.
  • Aug 06, 2017
Selina Meyer's first full year as president leads to perhaps the series' best season yet, and thanks to some unexpected sub-plots with her daughter (the show's most reserved characters) the series feels more eclectic too.
  • Jul 09, 2016
Something is missing from this season. The acting is still great but the dialogue is nowhere near the level of excellence of previous seasons.
  • Jul 02, 2016
Veep continues to deliver sharp and funny dialogues with absurdly hilarious situations thanks largely to Julia Louis-Dreyfus' landmark performance.
  • May 29, 2016
    who watches this stuff?
  • May 07, 2016
What happened? Went from clever, surprising, funny to predictable, lame...reminds me of last season/s of Seinfeld and Friends when the true talent left to start their own shows and hacks were left to run the show into the ground. Please HBO keep the good talent that made this show great, cut the hacks who think juice cleanse and how-old-is-sue thrulines are actually interesting and sad if this show continues like episode 2.
  • May 05, 2016
So talented is Julia Louis Drefus, she turns every role she played from Elaine, Christine to Madam President to gold. Completely owns these characters that one cannot imagine any one else taking them on.
  • Apr 29, 2016
this show's staying strong with each season
  • Apr 24, 2016
    Worth watching, funny show.
