It's 1667 and 28-year-old King Louis XIV has finally taken over sole command of France. When he commissions Versailles, Europe's most beautiful palace, the nobles seek entry into the lavish residence, which they do not realize is meant to imprison and control them. Among the ruler's prime targets is his younger brother, Monsieur. There's also romance in King Louis' life, as his queen, Marie Theresa, tries to tame his wandering eyes and win his heart back from his mistress, the English king's sister. Love, power, betrayal and war are all part of daily life in Versailles.

Versailles is cold and curiously uninvolving. Indeed, it's rather like the titular palais: ravishing to look at but ultimately an expensive folly. Go to Full Review

For those who have enjoyed Versailles over its first two seasons, Season 3 will deliver more of the same grandiosity, humor, and courtly intrigue that makes the show so entertaining even when it veers dangerously close to chaos. Go to Full Review
Emine Saner Guardian 03/24/2020
Versailles started with promise, but, like the palace itself, its lavish budget could probably have been better spent (on script editors, say, or some more distinctive wigs). Go to Full Review

There's gossip and scheming, political machinations and grandiose speeches. Romantic intrigue abounds. Everyone wears amazing outfits. What's not to love? Go to Full Review

Versailles is glamorous, highly camp and corny. Go to Full Review

Why, oh why, is this Louis XIV so boring? It is one of the great enigmas of this ambitious and sprawling now-dead series. Go to Full Review

Kl c Apr 25 It was okay. But compared to the other seasons...it wasn't the best one. The lasts episodes got me like 'wth is going on'. I still enjoyed it bc I was hooked but also I really loved the costumes in the serie See more tim m 11/09/2022 Seemed like the series was heading toward something important then in the 3rd season the wheels came off! It started chasing unfounded tales of the era. It reminded me so much of the last season of Game of Thrones. Just grab the deck of cards and toss them in the air and whatever lands faceup is the way they let the story fall. Really disappointing as I thought the acting, sets and visuals where all very interesting. Just seemed like just like the "Two Ds" of GoT the powers that be, just lost interest and were on to the next project. See more 08/15/2022 Awesome season. Covers intrigue with the Church and runs with the Man in the Iron Mask rumor. #SaveVersailles See more 02/12/2021 While the story is gripping at times, mostly it just drags on and by the end of it the main character is so unlikable you'll start looking for a guillotine. See more 01/26/2021 We loved the whole series and felt so sorry that it had not been renewed. The actors were wonderful, subtle and convincing, and the settings and costumes were dazzling. Great series that must us find out more about the Sun King and his court. See more 11/29/2020 I thoroughly enjoyed all three seasons. The cinematography and wardrobes were exceptional. Taught me a bit of history too! I loved all the actors, especially the brothers, had never come across them in anything else before. I had the opportunity to visit Versaille a long time ago but never went, I regret it. The Hall of Mirrors is incredible by the looks of things. If you enjoy history, with a bit of gore, sex and love, watch this series, you won't regret it. See more Read all reviews
