Victoria: Season 1 (2016)

SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Strong performances by Jenna Coleman and Rufus Sewell hint at Downton-esque potential for Victoria, but the narrative falls just shy of that soapy mark.

Tv Season Info

It's not easy being queen, as young Victoria (Jenna Coleman) quickly learns upon her ascension, at the age of 18, to the throne of England following the death of her uncle in 1837. First, she has to stand up to her mother (Catherine Flemming) and Sir John Conroy (Paul Rhys. Then, she upsets her subjects when they learn that she spread an ugly rumor about her mother's lady-in-waiting. As the season progresses, she also helps usher in a new government after the sitting prime minister resigns; defends her ladies in waiting; and, at the behest of her mother and Sir John, begins a search for a husband. Her selection, however, doesn't sit well with Parliament; and her choice has doubts of his own, as well, due to the financial arrangement she offers him. Marriage, pregnancy and more political clashes follow--as does the unthinkable: an assassination attempt.

Critic Reviews for Victoria Season 1

All Critics (40) | Top Critics (16)

Victoria was written and "created" by Daisy Goodwin, and although her dialogue offends me less than Julian Fellowes's, there is still something irritatingly wishful about the way she has organised her narrative.

Coleman totally convinced as the pint-sized powerhouse, conveying Victoria's girlish volubility, vulnerability and iron will all at once.

Sumptuous production - some historic liberties taken - and Coleman is terrific.

Coleman, fitted with blue contact lenses that make her eyes pop (in a good way), makes an enchanting young queen, and Sewell gives off more heat than any prime minister has a right to.

Jan 13, 2017 | Full Review…

Coleman and Hughes make a captivating team. The passion invigorates a production too often fixated on pageantry and parties.

Jan 13, 2017 | Full Review…

Heavy on romance and intrigue, light on political history.

Nov 15, 2018 | Full Review…

Victoria arrives in the United States with much of what we want in a period piece: gorgeous costumes... drama of epic proportions and creative licenses taken with real history in the name of good television.

Jan 4, 2017 | Full Review…

Coleman is as charismatic as ever, the sets and costumes are gorgeous but unfortunately Victoria doesn't have the soapy appeal of Julian Fellowes Downton Abbey or the sumptuous elegance of Andrew Davis' best .

Dec 6, 2016 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Coleman's terrific performance is the main reason to tune in. From the moment she first appears on screen, waking to the news that she is queen while still surrounded by dolls and her pet pooch Dash, she is fascinating to watch.

The stage has been set for some truly excellent television in the coming weeks.
