Victoria: Season 1 (2016)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

Strong performances by Jenna Coleman and Rufus Sewell hint at Downton-esque potential for Victoria, but the narrative falls just shy of that soapy mark.

Tv Season Info

It's not easy being queen, as young Victoria (Jenna Coleman) quickly learns upon her ascension, at the age of 18, to the throne of England following the death of her uncle in 1837. First, she has to stand up to her mother (Catherine Flemming) and Sir John Conroy (Paul Rhys. Then, she upsets her subjects when they learn that she spread an ugly rumor about her mother's lady-in-waiting. As the season progresses, she also helps usher in a new government after the sitting prime minister resigns; defends her ladies in waiting; and, at the behest of her mother and Sir John, begins a search for a husband. Her selection, however, doesn't sit well with Parliament; and her choice has doubts of his own, as well, due to the financial arrangement she offers him. Marriage, pregnancy and more political clashes follow--as does the unthinkable: an assassination attempt.

Sumptuous production - some historic liberties taken - and Coleman is terrific.

Jan 13, 2017 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

Coleman, fitted with blue contact lenses that make her eyes pop (in a good way), makes an enchanting young queen, and Sewell gives off more heat than any prime minister has a right to.

Coleman and Hughes make a captivating team. The passion invigorates a production too often fixated on pageantry and parties.

The stage has been set for some truly excellent television in the coming weeks.

For fans of flouncy skirts, romantic skirmishes in palaces, silk waistcoats and handsome English actors, Masterpiece's royal diversion may be hard to resist.

PBS' Victoria has all the ingredients of a long-running dramatic series. Call this one Buckingham Abbey.

Heavy on romance and intrigue, light on political history.

Victoria arrives in the United States with much of what we want in a period piece: gorgeous costumes... drama of epic proportions and creative licenses taken with real history in the name of good television.

Jan 4, 2017 | Full Review…

Coleman is as charismatic as ever, the sets and costumes are gorgeous but unfortunately Victoria doesn't have the soapy appeal of Julian Fellowes Downton Abbey or the sumptuous elegance of Andrew Davis' best .

Dec 6, 2016 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Coleman's terrific performance is the main reason to tune in. From the moment she first appears on screen, waking to the news that she is queen while still surrounded by dolls and her pet pooch Dash, she is fascinating to watch.

Dec 6, 2016 | Full Review…

Moving nicely from TARDIS to palace, Jenna Coleman in the title role combined wide-eyed innocence with an independence and hints at a steelier impetuosity that delivered well in this opening episode.

A more critical eye might pick faults but, mindful of how much worse things could be, I was just grateful for a big-budget serial that stayed away from [the] soft porn and philosophy of [Versailles].

This is so much better than I expected. Jenna Coleman is miraculous. I don't know how faithful it is to reality, I just accept it on its own terms.

The early life of Queen Victoria, from her ascension to the throne at the tender age of 18 to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.Jenna Coleman is always amazing. Tom Hughes as Prince Albert is excellent as well . What's more entertaining than being transported back into history . A Masterpiece production well at home in PBS .

Just like The Crown covers Queen Elizabeth II's life throughout her reign, this series covers Queen Victoria's. It almost looks like they are twin series full of drama, romance, politics and good historical accuracy. The first season covers the early life of Queen Victoria, from her ascension to the throne at the tender age of 18 to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert
