Vida only has six half-hour episodes in its first season, but it uses every one of them to tell vital stories that TV has traditionally ignored.

The vibrant series from Tanya Saracho touches on a number of issues from gentrification to assimilation and a decent amount of divisions in the community.

It's a very good, very complicated story about people who keep doing things that are frustrating, that seem to take them either a step backward or a step sideways for no good reason.

Still, there's a worthy show to be found in the characters who live in and hang out at Vida's old place, a story that is unerring in its details and full of ideas about the cultures it portrays.

Sexual identity, and plenty of graphic sex, are a big part of the picture here, but the more interesting subplots are in Vida's depiction of the Boyle Heights resistance.

It's a refreshing and beautiful series that feels both current and seriously overdue.

Vida doesn't address gentrification through a single story line, episode, or a few lines of dialogue; it's embedded in the premise of the whole series and in the identities of the characters it thoughtfully portrays.

Saracho's skills as a playwright are at the forefront here - the show moves at its own pace. It's richly soulful and plenty addictive, but it takes a few episodes to really pull back the layers of the characters.

From the basically unknown cast to the locations, Vida feels like it is tackling fresh and relatively unexplored cultural/relationship terrain.

From the second Vida begins, it instantly feels like nothing else you've ever seen on television.

Life may be too short, but Vida is just right.

The series lacks the wow factor to keep people going for hours at a time. But if you can take your time and enjoy the ride, Vida has the authenticity to make it all worth it.

Told through the unique lens of this Latinx family, Vida is a statement on upward mobility and the privilege of being able to outgrow your home.

Starz's half-hour drama about the Latinx community of East Los Angeles is authentic, grounded and like few other shows on TV.

Vida should never be lacking in things to say; it fires off socio-political commentary as fast as the quick-tempered Emma will come down on anyone who questions her heritage.
