"Vida" is a drama series about two Mexican-American siblings from East Los Angeles. Party girl Lyn lives a carefree life in the Bay Area. She couldn't be more different than, or distanced from, her sister Emma, with whom she has no relationship. A death in their family forces them to return to their old stomping grounds, where they confront long-repressed feelings and learn the surprising truth about their mother's identity.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A bittersweet farewell that's entirely too short, Vida's final season is as messy, beautiful, and inspirational as life itself.

Vida succeeds where others fail not just because the characters are richly developed, and not just because its masterfully written, but because it is both - all the time. Go to Full Review

What I love about Vida-the reason that I hope people will keep discovering it even after its deeply satisfying series finale-is how close it comes, especially in its second and third seasons, to capturing the rhythms of real, embodied life. Go to Full Review

The third season, while enjoyable, feels like a bookend on a story that wasn't ready to end. Even though it ends with a slightly forced button, "Vida" is never buttoned up. Go to Full Review

Tanya Saracho's Vida manages to have insightful, smart things to say about sex, sexuality, and sexual politics while also being just plain hot. Go to Full Review

"There's a magical quality to Vida that's hard to describe if you don't watch the show. There's a synergy to the way these characters connect and how their lives intertwine to produce something so potent that you don't want to look away." Go to Full Review

It was so fun to see Mari vlogging and organizing during the first two seasons. But, for me, there is something deeply powerful in seeing a fully chingona woman being a mature, empathetic, and sometimes shy advocate for change. Go to Full Review

02/15/2021 A touching ending, given the timeframe they had to work to close out the series. All I can say is I'm glad they left it open ended, in the hope another network will negotiate a deal to take it on or at least someone will change their minds and bring it back. The whole story is an important one to tell about family and relationships in a Mexican-American community and is unfortunately now left unfinished. I am left in awe at the genius and complexities of the storyline and with sadness at saying goodbye so soon to its characters. See more 09/06/2020 Season was way too short, and the final episode made it feel like a dropped telephone call. I hope it gets picked up at another network. See more 06/26/2020 A very courageous series with complex people and relationships. The lesbian emphasis was a breath of fresh air.
