A police investigation collides with the security services and the Royal Navy in an atmospheric mystery from the makers of "Line of Duty," in which a fishing trawler's inexplicable disappearance leads investigators below the waves into a shadowy world of intrigue. When a crew member is found dead aboard the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, the Scottish police begin an inquiry. The Vigil must remain on patrol in order to maintain the UK's nuclear deterrent, so Detective Amy Silva is forced to join the crew on board to conduct her investigation. Meanwhile, Detective Kirsten Longacre follows leads back on land. As the two pursue parallel trails, the case grows more sinister and broadens to include the highest levels of government and the British navy.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Taking Vigil out of its original submarine relieves the cabin pressure but also much of the suspense, although Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie's rapport still provides intrigue.

I’ve always preferred British thrillers to American procedurals, in part because of their willingness to confront hard truths and to complicate the narrative around policing. But in this instance, Vigil falls short. Go to Full Review

Jones’s DCI Silva is a great investigator, not especially likeable – even in scenes with her lover she’s distinctly cold – but she has a gift for methodically assessing bits of information... Go to Full Review

The physical pressure isn’t there, but the sharp-edged dynamic of investigating detectives and off-duty couple Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and a now pregnant Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) remains. Go to Full Review

Moving a lot of the action from a submarine off of the coast of Scotland to an Air Force base in the Middle East makes for a very different kind of series. However, I welcome the change. Obviously, it’s not as claustrophobic, but it’s still very... Go to Full Review

Colleen K @COLLEEN67 Jan 14 I found this, as in season one, a very well written and politically current show. The acting is excellent and most of the direction is super. It held my interest throughout. The only boring part is the, I feel, the predominance of the same sex relationships. The only romance was with 2 same sex couples. Maybe the aim is to promote same sex unions, but too much is dull and not proportinate in real life. See more Lyn A @lynandrews Dec 6 Reasonable series but I am unhappy with the attempts by TV and movie culture to up end God’s plan for parenthood. See more MD M @errorflex Dec 6 I can imagine the group of scriptwriters sitting around the table with a DEI/woke checklist. Same-sex relationships, check. Patriarchy bad, check. Good female officer manipulated by corrupt male superior, check. Good Arab people labelled as terrorists while trying to uncover bad English behaviour, check. Sigh…so obvious. And frankly, boring. See more Joshua M Nov 27 British thrillers are known for their gritty, realistic, compelling storylines, plot twists and brilliantly executed suspense. This series ticks none of those boxes. Unrealistic, a plot too unbelievable to be compelling, unlikely characters. The whole series falls flat. Predictable, boring, extremely disappointing. I wouldn't bother. See more FB I 03/19/2024 First season was outstanding. This season is a shame. Ok, I understand that it would be very difficult to make It better than season one, but this... What's going on in the film industry? Is everybody going mad with the scripts? See more Molly M 02/29/2024 Love the Silva/Longacre dynamic. It’s just keeps getting better. And the storylines & suspense really keep you on the eye of your seat. Give us season 3–with more episodes! See more Read all reviews
