Critics Consensus

Despite decent performances, Walker's bland storytelling and limited action fails to fill its namesake's butt-kicking boots.

Critic Reviews for Walker Season 1

All Critics (17) | Top Critics (7)

It's startling to say that this version feels like it's even shallower and more simplistic than the one with the star of Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection.

I suppose that gives Walker room to grow in upcoming episodes, but for now, he's a Raylan Givens facsimile with extremely sanded-down edges.

Jan 22, 2021 | Rating: C+ | Full Review…

The annoying thing is that being a total failure as a remake of Walker [TR]... doesn't necessarily mean that Walker is a total failure as a TV show. It's just something different, and I wish it had just committed to being that different thing entirely

Jan 21, 2021 | Full Review…

There are no shortage of nods to the world today, but in the pilot at least none of them shifts the needle. It's improvement by increment: the plots aren't as corny, Padalecki can act. In many ways Walker is a show of small steps forward.

Jan 21, 2021 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

Its first outing seems unsteady and uncertain, surprisingly so for a franchise that has historically traded on certitude.

Jan 21, 2021 | Full Review…

The secret sauce here might be Padalecki and his easy-going charm... One suspects many of his fans will simply be happy to see him back in action, but even for them, Walker represents a relatively low-key way to get your kicks.

Western cop reboot hypes Texas Ranger family drama.

Feb 2, 2021 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Even though there are areas that need work, Walker's debut is a strong one. A show like this lives or dies by its ability to deliver intriguing characters we connect with. Walker hits the bullseye there.

Jan 25, 2021 | Rating: 2.75/5 | Full Review…

The CW's Walker is a total yawn. A generic, paint-by-numbers family drama that offers some hints at the possibility for telling timely stories in the future, the series does little to reimagine itself in a compelling way.

Jan 22, 2021 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

Despite being an incredibly unlikely candidate, the CW's reboot, Walker, actually manages to chart an imperfect -- but promising -- road forward for what cop shows might look like in a post-Black Lives Matter, post-#AbolishICE America.

A refreshing new take on a character that was very one-dimensional in the 1990s.

It turns out to be a rather bland Western-tinged crime show.

Audience Reviews for Walker: Season 1

This show should have been named something else. It is by no means walker, it is nothing but family drama
  • Feb 24, 2021
Meh. I watched Supernatural faithfully, every week, for 15 years. I love seeing Jared back in action, but this show is unfortunately incredibly boring. I don't care much about special effects or action sequences myself, but it has little of either if that's what you wanted. The storyline is trite and tired. The characters lack depth, or in fact anything that makes them remotely interesting. I don't care, so far, what happens to anyone. I'll try to give it a chance since we are only a few episodes in, but I'm not too excited.

Maybe is a low budget show, but the dialogues and the relationships between the characters it is so obvious and without ideas, that everything seems written by a child
  • Feb 21, 2021
I started to watch it because of Jared, but I can't make through 2 episodes. It was boring and not my kind of show. It's action but at the same time not... it was drama but not completely... the comedy timing is a little cringe.

I hope they switch the Walker show from 8pm to 10pm. I need something to put me to sleep at 10.
  • Feb 19, 2021
This is a blatant case of Bait And Switch! No karate! Really not much fighting! The show seems to be geared toward emotional girls. They could have had this be a stand alone show rather than trying to use the Walker name to gain viewers. In no way, shape, or form does this resemble Walker Texas Ranger!

I've seen the first episode of Walker. I did not like it. I will not watch anymore of this show. I think everything needs to be changed about this show. 1. The plot/synopsis/setting or whatever needs to be changed. 2. Cordell Walker needs to be changed, into Brad Pitt or Chad Michael Murray 3. The whole cast needs be changed. 4. Cordell Walker should have a male partner. I know in Walker, Texas Ranger he did have a female partner, but his actual partner since the beginning was James Trivette, a male. 5. Cordell Walker should have no kids. It would make the show look better. 7. Cordell Walker was more like a boss. People looked up to him on the real "Walker, Texas, Ranger". 8. Cordell Walker on the real "Walker, Texas Ranger, was calm. 9. The Cordell Walker in the new show "Walker" is not the right face. He shows his emotions, and it seems like this Walker don't know what he's doing. He also looks goofy. 10. There should not be a boss. I thought Cordell walker was the boss. If there was a boss in the old "Walker, Texas Ranger" show I probably did not notice because I thought Cordell Walker was always the boss. 11. A remake of the real "Walker, Texas Ranger", would be sooooo much better. Jared Padalecki is the guy that is playing Cordell Walker. I mean don't get me wrong, I've seen him act before. He appeared in "SuperNatural, House of Wax, and Friday the 13th. Jared Padalecki did great in those roles, but him as Cordell walker, that is an uppercase word, NO. I saw the first episode. It was definitely TERRIBLE. That show "Walker" is not a must continue show. The new Walker is not no Walker, Texas Ranger, more like Walker, Terrible Ranger or Walker, the Rookie Ranger. They need to remake the real actual Walker, Texas Ranger show using these people as the cast members. Either Brad Pitt or Chad Michael Murray (Ranger Cordell Walker) Lance Gross (James Trivette) Lauren Sweetser (Alex Cahill) Russell Hodgkinson (C.D. Parker) Nicole Gale Anderson (Sydney Cooke) Either Oliver Stark or Dustin Mcneer (Francis Gage) "Everything different is not always the best different." Every actor/actress can't play every role. It's all about the right faces when having them act out roles. I don't understand how the new show "WALKER" is still on. It should already be canceled. The show is dry. I just watched the 1st episode. The real ranger was calm, a boss, and someone that knows what he's doing. PEOPLE...I know that y'all want to watch something new, but please don't just watch anything, because that's what these movies/shows people are going to keep making...ANYTHING. Just like y'all replaced Vivian from "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and Claire from "My Wife And Kids". Y'all need to replace Cordell Walker...but the only difference is that all the cast on Walker needs to be replaced and the show needs a start over to something more interesting, like an actual remake of Walker, Texas Ranger.

I keep watching it hoping it gets better. The show gets lost in Cordell's emotional roller-coaster which ranges from introspective to just plain sad. Cordell Walker is supposed to be a bad ass but there is very little action and what is clear so far is that Micki Ramirez (Lindsey Morgan) is the ass kicker in this show. The reason I keep watching is because I was a huge Jared Padalecki's fan in Supernatural. We all knew he could pull off amazing action and fight scenes... so I am hopping he eventually wakes up.
  • Feb 12, 2021
There is not enough action and kind of boring. I growled up watching the original Walker, and this one is not cutting it so far. If it doesn't step up I don't see it making it to season 2. Maybe they should bring his partner from Supernatural to be on the show, he makes a good tough guy.

It hurts me that CW keeps getting all these "great" IPs. The acting is passable and the casting is pretty bad. The episodes are extremely predictable and I found myself checking my phone or opening a webpage due to lack of interest. I was hoping for something better...
