Tv Season Info

The fourth and final season of the moody mystery series finds the oft-morose Swedish police detective Kurt Wallander (Kenneth Branagh) facing his biggest fear—that he's following his father's proverbial footsteps into dementia—while tackling a trio of intricate cases. It's in the first episode, "The White Lines," that he begins to suspect that something is wrong; while searching for a missing Swedish woman in South Africa, he experiences dizzy spells and blackouts. In "A Lesson in Love," the second episode, his zealousness to find the missing daughter of a murder victim leads him to overlook something important. He also bonds with daughter Linda's father-in-law, a former Swedish naval officer; and, worried about his deteriorating mental state, sees a doctor. The final episode, "The Troubled Man," finds him determined to find Linda's father-in-law, who's gone missing, despite being officially off-duty due to his ongoing memory issues.

Critic Reviews for Wallander Series 4

Branagh has grown older and chunkier, and ungainlier at running, of which he had to do a lot. Yet the role feels like a replenishment, too.

My word, it was dreary.

Branagh inhabits the role so fully, glimpses of the gloomy intense detective aren't entirely bleached out by the sunshine.

Branagh's performance deepens as the disease ravages Wallander's memory. He captures a proud man facing the worse betrayal imaginable, his own mind, leaving him lost and afraid in places and around people he's known for years.

The series is still a more satisfying televised mystery than average has a lot to do with its consistently high production values and the original decision to film it in the locations where the books are set.

The case becomes more complicated and more intriguing, with roots that spread down into the country's past.

Branagh is remarkable in the role. He was from the start but now he is obviously relishing the aging Wallander's doubts and frailty.
