Weird City: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Weird City

Critics Consensus

A delightfully off-kilter combination of satire and science fiction, Weird City lives up to its name and then some -- even when it retreads familiar genre ground.

Very funny, but it puts story and characters above commentary all the way through.

From the show's kooky wardrobe to its strange, fantastical take on dystopian science fiction, Weird City is basically what would happen if Black Mirror had a baby with Back to the Future Part II.

The most bizarre choice here, though, was to start the series with a story that, particularly given later twists, feels very reminiscent of Black Mirror episode Hang the DJ, a comparison it inevitably can't live up to.

It's a perfect device for injecting class conflict into what's basically a satirical science fiction fantasy. Of course, like all anthologies, some episodes are better than others.

In an era where satire can feel dull, Weird City feels like a breath of air. It's a little on the nose. But it's also fully aware that it's on the nose between the Blade Runner references and the meta-textual references.

I wish this show wasn't behind a paywall, because I feel like so many people would love to watch this show.

If Black Mirror is a dark warning sign not to forget our humanity, Weird City is a bright, flashing neon light that pokes fun at us while also reminding us we're probably doomed.

I don't begrudge Charlie Sanders's YouTube Premium series Weird City for taking a big swing, even if the series mostly misses.

Has the same targets as the acclaimed Netflix show - our obsession with technology and how it invades our lives and often corrupts our intentions. But it plays these anxieties for laughs.

Weird City's writing is sharp and self-aware enough to at least give it a shot.

Yet, even at a sprightly average of 25 minutes, most Weird City episodes feel like sketch ideas that have been stretched out a little too far.

The costume design is amazing. O'Brien's shirt collars deserve their own Emmy. Can we get someone on that?

    fun. surprisingly entertaining

I recently saw the first 2 episodes. I felt the same creep level as I do with Black Mirror. Creepy BUT entertaining! Appeals to the scifi nut in me. Good characters, acted well, and a strong underlying social message.

weiirdddd but in a good way

Yeah, first episode was a bit weird... a little bit of an SJW vibe.
  • Feb 17, 2019
Funny and pretty well written at times.

Great Satire. Better off Ted meets Black Mirror. Just enjoy and go with it.

I've seen too many reviews, where people completely miss the point of the show. It isn't supposed to be outstanding Award-winning acting with a complex storyline and script. It's a fantastic in your face hyper-satirical take on where we're going in society and they do it in an outstanding manner. I would love for more people to see this and really embrace it for what it is, a show to make you look around and really see what were doing and where it may lead.

A weird anthology elevated by the talent of its cast. Episode 1 is perhaps the greatest premiere and introduction one could hope for, while episode 5 cemented its place for me as the favourite. What a joyful ride.

First episode had me hooked and I am excited to see more!
