Westworld: Season 3 Reviews

March 23, 2020
The writers play with all the metaphorical possibilities of sex toys and punching bags gaining consciousness, and the dystopian technology-ruled future Nolan and Joy draw for us feels creepily plausible.

It all looks amazing, at times like Blade Runner and at others like a really expensive hotel in Dubai, but I'm constantly struggling to properly get on top of where we are, or why.

Even at its most pompous and silly, Westworld remains a thrill a second, and ironically, given that it loves a Big Question, it's best enjoyed when not thinking too deeply about the answer.

The fantastic spectacle merely brought into sharp relief how familiar and thin the storytelling was, how 2.0 its philosophising.

The nagging sense watching Westworld now is that the first season was, in hindsight, as good as it's going to get, and once it reached the center of the maze, there was no obvious path left to follow.

Westworld needed real humanity, unprogrammed and flawed, and Paul's performance is a saving grace in this respect.
March 13, 2020
It's the most frustratingly not-quite-there show on TV: structurally bold, visually arresting, often brilliantly acted, show-off-ily erudite... and woefully predisposed to turn subtext into text.

The show's production remains sleek and eye-catching, however, and its ideas at least superficially intriguing, as long as the stellar cast can hold onto your attention.
March 11, 2020
This is a zanier, sillier Westworld, and much more entertaining for it.

Like Maeve says, none of it matters, because none of it feels real... As a result, everything looks cool, but rings hollow.

This necessary reset looks great, but if the 2nd taught us anything, just watch, don't think.

It's a beautifully shot show, featuring some of TV's most ambitious special effects, but you could take nearly every dialogue-lite scene and turn it into a commercial for perfume or some luxury automobile.
March 9, 2020
Still, the series is as slick and excessive as you might remember, and sometimes that's enough to help forget about everything else.
March 6, 2020
It becomes clear quite quickly that this season, Westworld wants to show us how much humanity and hosts have in common.

My main feeling is I really enjoyed the show about cowboy robots in a theme park that apparently ended years ago.

March 6, 2020
Westworld is an artfully produced trip through topical and imagined wormholes, and the fact that it loses its way as often as its characters lose their minds is at once apropos and frustrating.
March 6, 2020
Westworld wants to generate another existential conversation in Season 3, but even as the show swaps settings and introduces new faces, the details that make it come to life are perfunctory.

Westworld doesn't need to be alienating to be good; it still is. But it may need to be alienating to be Westworld... In becoming a totally fine action serial, Westworld has taken a significant step back from being great
