White Dragon: Season 1 Reviews

April 9, 2019
Last night's opening episode sucked me straight in and ended with a twist that would make even Bodyguard writer Jed Mercurio jealous.

If it weren't for the background actors Strangers could be set anywhere in the world. Here's hoping upcoming episodes treat Hong Kong almost like a secondary character, an exciting place to steep the mystery in.

Thrillers are rarely verbose, nor do they need to be, but this one appears to have lost respect for its audience's intelligence along the way.

Hong Kong-set mystery has stereotypes, some violence.

Universally intelligent performances make even minor characters interesting and hard to pin down even as they are being employed by the writers to well-defined, practical ends.

That White Dragon doesn't completely collapse under the sheer weight of its plot and its many characters is a victory in and of itself.

A seducing ride it is through dark places, terrifying confrontations, and tightly woven conspiracies elegantly undone.
February 8, 2019
The mystery of White Dragon isn't interesting enough to propel us to watch more episodes, despite fine performances.

It's not that the premise is terrible or the cast bad - John Simm did a heroic job with dialogue that was sometimes good, sometimes banal. It's just that to become invested in any thriller you must first be invested in at least some of the characters.

A conspiracy thriller which, for better or worse, feels like it could have been made any time in the last 20 years

[Strangers has the] always watchable John Simm doing what he does best: looking knackered and on the verge of tears.
February 8, 2019
This thriller, starring John Simm, is set in Hong Kong and thus far features good white people and bad Chinese people (sigh) plus a banal script.

Using Hong Kong to turbocharge a dull story is cheating a bit, like using lobster and truffles on MasterChef, but no amount of neon or night markets could mask the overfamiliar scenes.
February 7, 2019
The show does its job as gritty tourist-noir, though, with the director Paul Andrew Williams laying on the neon and the susurrating traffic and taking us to sites familiar to fans of Hong Kong's rich cinematic history.
February 4, 2019
The miniseries almost sticks its landing. Its final scene can't resist a bit of mawkish sentimentality to wrap the story. It's not earned or needed.

Talking of acting... John Simm is wading through a porridge of a script in Strangers and is in sad danger of becoming the Gregg Wallace of primetime crime drama.

Big let-down. The setting is unconvincing, the dialogue is stilted and, worst of all, the characters are not engaging.

Oddly for a thriller, Strangers is best in its quiet moments.
