Detective Inspector Joseph Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones) has book smarts and is eager to gain the experience to move upward in the department. When things get complicated, DI Chandler enlists the help of Edward Buchan (Steve Pemberton) an expert on Jack the Ripper who exposes similarities to those killings more than 100 years earlier. Accents, creepy historical crimes, that handsome English actor who always plays princes and posh boys, that less handsome English actor who always plays taxi drivers and oiks. What's not to like?

It's a bit tonally inconsistent but this is entertaining television bolstered by strong performances throughout and the dark edge provided by the word Ripper.

Whitechapel is far more entertaining than it has any right to be.
