Critic Reviews for Will Miniseries

All Critics (32) | Top Critics (18)

Sure, it's fun to see Shakespeare get some; fortunately, Will manages to find depth beyond that.

Jul 11, 2017 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

Will is fun, like a supercharged Shakespeare in Love, but the regalia, pacing, and dazzling colors often seem like compensations for a somewhat obvious and awkwardly expository script.

Entertaining newcomer full of energy, passion and baloney -- the ideal summer diversion.

Will doesn't seem that interested in Shakespeare as a playwright. And the resulting attempts to shoehorn him into other roles -- sultry lover, newly minted celebrity, reluctant renegade -- make for a frequently befuddling viewing experience.

Jul 10, 2017 | Full Review…

The most enduring writer deserved a better series than the flashy Will, which will never cause a tempest.

Jul 10, 2017 | Full Review…

TNT's Will does a surprisingly entertaining and sometimes even thoughtful job of this in presenting Shakespeare as a wide-eyed, young gun writer hoping to make his mark in order to feed his wife and their three children.

While Will is a bad addition to the canon of modern work about Shakespeare, it's a relevant addition to an even more important genre: dramas about hot versions of historical figures.

Oct 16, 2018 | Full Review…

Will has triumphed over Topcliffe and arrived at a certain level of stardom, and everyone -- even Marlowe -- recognizes his skill.

Jun 22, 2018 | Full Review…

The problem with Will is not necessarily that it fictionalizes Shakespeare's life, but that it does so in such a dull, haphazard way.

Jul 6, 2017 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Let's hope one day the stages of Will and the casting couches of Hollywood will seem like distant, impossible nightmares.

I absolutely loved this show. I think people were shocked by the adult content! They kept moving it later and it was hard to keep up with the time changes. I was disappointed on how it left you hanging in the last episode. I think it should be made available in an app or pay per view instead of being cancelled totally?!?! Bring back Will in some kind of format,??????????????The ??is mightyer than the ??....?????????????????????

Quite interesting TV-show. In comparison with all that we can see on TV right now, it's like a breath of fresh air

I've watched all the episodes currently out and am hungry for more. Please tell me they mean to do more than just the 10 episodes i've watched and loved. If they end things here, i shall be terribly sad.

I have always been a fan of Shakespeare and this show does not disappoint. Who hasn't wondered what his life was like in his 20's? Updating Shakespeare is a fabulous idea for the 21st century. They nailed Marlowe and the sense of wide eyed wonder, fear, terror etc. that Shakespeare must have felt when he first arrived in London. I found it gritty, sensual, dark, funny and the list goes on. I hope they decide to renew for a 2nd season.

It's not a new concept to combine more modern music and characters to a very old show or movie. I think they do it well on this show & love the characters.

While a work of fiction and not historically accurate, I'm really enjoying this show for the period drama entertainment it is. Also, excellent soundtrack!!!!

Excellent series, only found it towards the end of the season so I assume a lot of people don't know about it

As a huge fan of Shakespeare's works, as well theatre in the Renaissance, I can confidently say this show does not fail to entertain me. Though this show is mainly about William Shakespeare, the multiple perspectives throughout each episode are interesting and thought-compelling. Big fan of Will, hopefully it will reach a larger following, it is definitely a solid show!

I think the show is SUPERB! Anyone who knows about “Shakespeare” plays knows that they are almost always done in a version reflecting the present time or even a mix of the ages. They’re meant to “hold a mirror” to the times. I LOVE this version!! It feels perfect to reflect now and also then!
