What to Know

Critics Consensus

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Wonder Man, turning in a sly performance alongside an equally wonderful Ben Kingsley in this low-stakes superhero fare that boasts high-hearted personal drama as its winning factor.

Audience Says

Wonder Man finds alchemy in its leading men, who deliver a refreshingly human story with greater emotional power than straight up kicks -- and it’s all the stronger for it.

A satire about struggling actors and the ludicrous Hollywood inequality they’re trying to get around doesn’t sound like a particularly original idea, but when you plug it into the dour world of Marvel superheroes it’s actually a welcome change of pace. Go to Full Review

The actors’ chemistry and undeniable bromance is a great reason to watch, but this is also an entertaining and low-stakes story that doesn’t require mass MCU viewing or knowledge to fully enjoy. Go to Full Review

It’s a different kind of Marvel epic. Special effects take a backseat to laughs as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley spoof egomaniac actors who learn it’s better to stop chasing fame and be in it for the love of the game. Go to Full Review

Though it falters as a comics adaptation, it succeeds as a worthy and unique experiment in dialogue-driven, chemistry-fueled character study. Go to Full Review

He avoids mythologizing the character; instead, he humanizes him. It’s a performance that understands heroism as something accidental and uneasy, rather than ordained. Go to Full Review

The script stands out for its meticulous detail and its ability to surprise, moving away from the rigid structures of the MCU to embrace even surreal moments. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Tennessee1987 T @Tennessee1987 10h Although I appreciated the exposition exploring the work that goes into a production (which is arguably the ONLY positive), overall It was a flop for me. The music was boring, the comedy was stale, & I don't see the importance in changing the lead character's culture to haitian. So because it's fictional, race doesn't matter, but cultural identity does? Disclosing the cultural identity of real life actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's father did not benefit nor move the story forward. (Intended to be a plot device, but comes off more like filler..a party occurs, but there isn't affect to how the character moves throughout the story, he never even speaks Creole.) If it isn't pivotal to the telling of the story, then why are we talking about it, "show the audience, don't tell". I shouldn't have to go read a blog as to why the change was made, keep your excuses for your poor storytelling. It also felt like there were no black writers in the writer's room. See more Marco L @decatur555 2d Wonder Man may not look like a major MCU event, but that’s exactly why it works. Instead of constant spectacle, it focuses on character, tone and a surprisingly heartfelt central relationship. The shorter episode format sometimes makes it feel like a film cut into pieces, and not every joke lands. Still, its smaller scale and sincerity make it stand out in a crowded superhero landscape. It introduces future Marvel elements without overwhelming the story, keeping things grounded and personal. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s fresh, warm and genuinely enjoyable. Sometimes Marvel shines more when it goes smaller. See more Fifi S @Fifisalomon 2d I adored this show! So great!! such a fun, sweet and unique show. Has become one of my favorites:) See more Jacob B 4d Hate to go for the obvious joke but Wonder Man is a wonder, man! Seriously, this show's really enjoyable despite the lack of superhero shenanigans. The friendship between its two leads is the definitive highlight whilst also talking about the struggles actors have to go through and having a compelling narrative about the protagonists dealing with their own skeletons in their proverbial closets. As a character-driven story, Wonder Man definitely feels like something that could only work as a Disney+ series rather than a full-blown feature film. Overall, an excellent piece of television that provides something different from the usual Marvel formula. While I do think about if the actual in-universe movie could get defictionalised one day, I think it'd be for the better if that didn't happen. It probably wouldn't live up to its in-universe hype as a work of art. Plus, the "in-universe film" premise didn't work out for Lightyear so I figure there's no point in Marvel doing the same. See more Ryan S. @Rusty88 6d If you’re looking for a comic book inspired action series, look elsewhere. This is character driven series that just happens to feature someone with powers. Wonderful series with an artistic feel to it that you don’t really see in superhero series. See more Ricky C @Ricritic 6d Wonderful series. Well worth the watch. I had no idea about the comic book character or its history. So going into this with fresh eyes and no expectation is a great starting point. Loved every minute of it. See more Read all reviews
