Helen Hunt and Sean Bean star in this sweeping historical drama that follows the intertwined lives of ordinary civilians from Britain, Poland, France, and Germany, during World War II. The series traces the fates of several families from 1939-1940, from the Nazi invasion of Poland to the fall of Paris and beyond. Each of the characters are from different backgrounds and countries, and play different roles in the war, but are ultimately united by their struggle to survive in difficult circumstances.

In the wrong hands, the whole thing could collapse easily into melodrama or, worse, tedium. But World on Fire's second season also highlights how much history is only getting told now for the first time, nearly a century on. Go to Full Review

Really, it’s a soap with a pretty cast – Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Harry, can currently be seen as dreamy Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid – and a love triangle at its heart. Go to Full Review

It was a decent finale, even though it left more frustrating loose threads than an old cardi... Go to Full Review

A fun aspect of the show is the many recognizable faces in its cast, whether new or fueled by nostalgia. Go to Full Review

World on Fire musters all these familiar stereotypes very well. It really is a proper Sunday night drama. Go to Full Review

Approached as a kind of instructional soap with a moral purpose, [World on Fire] makes for easy viewing while also prompting us to reflect on war’s endless catalogue of horrors, now visible again in real time. Go to Full Review

ThePatrolex 03/18/2024 A really engaging storytelling with an excellent execution. The cast was quite interesting. I really love the multilanguage aspect of the show. It really shows the world to its viewers. This adds a layer of authenticity and realism, especially it shows the story is set in a real culturally diverse environment. See more Steve G @dcssteve 01/12/2024 Season one was a great production and at the end of it I was looking forward to Season 2. OMG, a huge hole, how did Kasia and Harry get back to England, How was Lois' fiancee killed; he just disappeared with some brief mention of killed in action. Last we saw in season one was a joyful kiss and a marriage acceptance. Now in season 2 all we have is more soap opera and conflict between characters. I am two episodes into season 2 and I think this is the end. I am unimpressed with most writers, they cannot seem to break away from a pattern and do creative thinking. Looks like they sunk this series. The writers used the season break to create a discontinuity and relieve them of connecting seasons. Many valuable characters also vanished. Great acting performances - poor writing. See more Doug H @Dougals 12/16/2023 We had really been looking forward to the new season of what was one of the better Masterpiece presentations. But most of the more interesting characters have unaccountably disappeared and the interwoven story lines dumbed down. Without Lesley Manville, there would be nothing about this worth your time. See more Pedro C 12/10/2023 So many main characters vanished from season 01 to the 2nd, looked something else entirely See more Bruce E 11/20/2023 The writing needs a better editor. I read a writer once say that illogical things in fiction will wake the reader from the dream that fiction is supposed to be. (Warning on plot reveals) A few example wrong and silly things : the Indian officer says he fought Mussolini in Ethiopia (British and Indian army never did), in desert they are running out of drinking water but immediately after they are shaving with water (apparently a clean appearance is more important than survival), the unwed mother/nurse decides to have a sudden change of heart, not go to her shift tending to wounded men and just somehow pop back to Britain (besides the fact that this would be desertion how could she arrange such a trip in wartime? Writer seems to be living too much in 2023). Etc And the whole idea of someone's wife being expected to tend to the baby from a previous relationship of her husband beggars belief. Maybe it seems slightly plausible in 2023 but highly unlikely in 1940s. See more James R @Pennsylvania 11/20/2023 Endless boring conversations. Apparently the producers thought the Hollywood-style casting would be best....so lots of pretty actors and actresses. You can tell they paid for only a little CGI, so it's 95% dumb scenes with folks just talking interspersed with fake looking action shots. The North Africa scenes are all shot with some stupid-looking yellow lens. Impressive promos, but one of the bigger dogs Masterpiece has done in many years See more Read all reviews
