There's an emotional grit and resonance to this fictionalised version of the Wu-Tang Clan story... Even non-fans can dig it.

Dirty's every gesture-every swigged drink and slinky entrance-is dancerly, in a series that plays like a great piece of work about the quest to achieve freedom of movement.

A dense look at how it all came together, with a strong cast that includes Ashton Sanders ("Moonlight") as Bobby Diggs, a.k.a. RZA. Even so, with that much time to fill, the pacing doesn't exhibit much sense of urgency.

It captures some of the group's kaleidoscopic perspective and nascent brilliance, but leaves too many of its best ideas half-developed.

It's good and so gritty you'll need to pick the grit from your teeth afterwards.

What it does best is depict street-level life with unflashy, unremarkable plainness, showing us New York as the man who'd become the RZA saw it.
