What to Know

Critics Consensus

Young Sherlock doesn't aim to recreate Conan Doyle's work, rather, it takes pride in its liberal adaptation, delivering Guy Ritchie's signature blend of precise entertainment, sly style, and ingratiating characters.

This is a smooth-brained Sherlock. Anyone hoping for the puzzle-cracking pleasures of Benedict Cumberbatch’s BBC series, or any real character development, will be disappointed. Go to Full Review

While the other characters in the series talk a lot about how smart Sherlock is, Ritchie hasn’t got the patience or confidence to persuasively demonstrate this. Go to Full Review

The man destined to be Sherlock’s greatest enemy is, at least for now, his biggest ally, and that’s the best decision this series makes. Go to Full Review

One of the best series of the year with an amazingly fresh take on Sherlock Holmes with a career defining performance from Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Go to Full Review

Young Sherlock succeeds because it treats youth not as novelty but as a crucible. It explores the making of a mind, not just the solving of a mystery. The overall trajectory of season 1 is confident and engaging. Go to Full Review

Cathleen H @Catyzcalo 5d This was way more fun than I expected. A little over-the-top at times, but I liked the energy and the mystery kept me interested. See more Mica B @Mica_B 6d The first half was very strong, it did slightly fall off in the second half when the main reveals happened, but other than that this was fabulous. The acting was phenomenal. I really loved Sherlock, Mycroft, and Moriarty. They picked great actors for them. The female actors were good, but their characters were horrendous, except for Cordelia, Sherlock's mom, for most of her scenes. She was good. The young female characters, (the ones closest to the main characters ages.) are so bad. They're sterotypical "badasses" and I absolutely hate the romance that they bring to the table. WE DON'T NEED ROMANCE IN EVERYTHING, FOR HEAVENS SAKE. It's just annoying and they intrude in the bromance between Sherlock and Moriarty. Lol. If there is a second season, I am interested to see how they handle Moriarty and his inevitable changes. I just hope these bad female characters are written off, and replaced with better ones. And I really hope they don't increase the amount of romance in it either... See more Garret R @RomaVictor9 Aug 10 The visual feel seemed off, almost forced. Nearly every indoors scene was dark, almost black. Many times the actors' faces were lost. Half the screen was wasted over and over. There was nothing appealing or stylish to many of these dark, puzzling scenes. Frustrating to watch. See more Jillian D @DyerJ Aug 9 Good strong first season, look forward to watching more. Entertaining and good story. See more Constantine E @TheSpectrolite Aug 9 With a talented cast, skilled direction, and intelligent writing, Young Sherlock is as compelling as it is intriguing. Every episode deepens your curiosity, not just about the mysteries, but about the journey of seeing how a young Sherlock Holmes evolves into the legendary detective See more Trina P @Trina800 Aug 7 Good start but gradually declined for me, particularly the last 2-3 episodes. Leaned too much into action and gun battles. The early episodes were good, had a decent backdrop with the university and the mystery and investigative work from the duo. Just seemed to fall off a cliff towards the end, literally! See more Read all reviews
