Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe 01/08/2021
The story line is a glut of rom-com clichés, hardly worth tuning in for. And Jane Levy, who has shined in Suburgatory and, briefly, in Shameless, is a bit too weary-dreary as Zoey. Go to Full Review

Just as delightful as the lovely first, if a little more somber. Go to Full Review

It hits that rare sweet spot of being both funny and poignant, involves live musical numbers that aren't cloying, and also addresses the realities of loving and losing a family member who is chronically ill. Go to Full Review

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist carries on in its handling of grief and the strange feelings it dredges up, gently exploring the lonely space it occupies, the emptiness that hits like a punch to the gut, and the deep-seated pain it begets. Go to Full Review

02/10/2022 One of my favorite shows. I love the entire cast. I am also now watching Suburgatory that I never watched because she's in it and just as charming in her earlier career. I adore Skylar's voice. I love all the singing, but since Pitch Perfect I have had a soft spot for his voice and personality. This is a heartfelt and charming series with a terrific premise. It's a complete shame that it was canceled and I really do hope it is saved by another network or streaming service because there can certainly be more story here. Nonetheless, what is available are two consistent seasons of television that are a lot of fun because of the musical numbers but memorable because of the wonderful characters. Jane Levy is completely lovable in the lead role but all the other actors also do impressive jobs. This show has humor and heart and is just pleasant to watch all the way through. It's a bright spot in feel-good television that deserves a chance to continue its story. Dealt with themes of handling loss, depression, racial equality, LGBTQ+ issues even within the community, and relationship struggles. Singing and dancing were fantastic, even if at some points the voices sounded a LITTLE over-processed. The one thing that was weird and I didn't like as much was the last episode. It kinda felt all over the place, and the last scene felt a little bit forced. The ending is definitely a great concept, but I was expecting something a little less cheesy given the show's record of dealing with difficult themes. I was expecting an ending maybe more about acceptance and moving on. That seemed to be where the episode was going until that very last scene… maybe the network made the show create a "fairytale happy ending". But overall, great and one of my favorite shows now! I'm so sad this one was cancelled. See more Read all reviews
