Tv Season Info

At the beginning of Season 1 of this musical comedy, Zoey Clarke (Jane Levy) decides to get an MRI fearing that she might be developing symptoms of a neurological disease; when an earthquakes hits during the procedure, her brain suffers some kind of damage and she is left with the ability of reading people's minds as they sing their thoughts. Questioning her sanity, she starts using her power for her own interests: she tries to figure out if her crush Simon (John Clarence Stewart) is interested in her, and manages to impress her boss Joan (Lauren Graham) at work. However, it isn't until she discovers that her gift allows her to talk to her father, who had stopped communicating with her due to a disease, that she convinces herself to use her power for good.

These can be all-encompassing social issues, but rather than develop them within an episode or season, the show argues that their solutions should be easy to find... It resolves this cliffhanger fairly quickly. Nothing extraordinary about that, right?

"Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" is at its most charming when it allows itself to be silly. The musical numbers aren't overly polished or elaborate but have just enough potential for a visual surprise.

The imperfections save viewers from having to submit to the overly produced musical segments that undermined "Glee," and it helps give the series the intimacy it requires for the story to work.

"Zoey" may have worked as a sharply written 30-minute dramedy, but if it wants to be a "This Is Us"-level heart-tugger, the writers can't use the extra runtime on redundant songs.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist isn't in that league - but Austin Winsberg's show, like its characters, comes to life once the music element is introduced. That's never more true than when Zoey is alone with her father, Mitch.

"Zoey" unsteadily launches a new decade for network TV, but where there's talent, there's promise. "Zoey" at least has both.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist guarantees laughs, bops, and tears and season 1 serves as a perfect musical treat for the fans of the genre.

There are storylines that fall into typical comedic situations (like a love triangle or the rogue heartbreaking storyline that brings us to tears while we're laughing) but still, it's a lovely watch overall.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is a high-concept show with rich storytelling potential.

Mar 10, 2020 | Full Review…

Zoey successfully juggles multiple tones within its jubilantly surreal framework: romantic and workplace comedy - Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham is a delight as her brittle boss - and touching family drama.

Perhaps more story, fewer boy band moves and "Zoey's Playlist" could move from the B side to the hit list.

It all comes back to Levy, who does a great job bouncing from scene to scene as a sweet-faced millennial who doesn't know a lot about music but has a real knack for helping out those in need.

I absolutely loved this show! It can make me laugh and cry within minutes! It's fresh, it's heartwarming, and I absolutely love the music!!! It's a great concept for a TV show. I love all of the characters, but Mo really cracks me up...so sassy!!!

consistently entertaining, charming and often very very funny, ZOEY'S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST mixes the dramatic and the comical absurdity of it's often-nutty-and-aloof workplace characters (most notably, the always-charming Skylar Astin and the ever-entertaining Lauren Graham as Zoey's unpredictable boss lady) with several eye-popping, toe-tapping musical numbers spun around some classic and well-known pop songs! highly recommended! 5/5; 8.5/10, 47/50, 96/100

Its a little cringy, a little weird, but above all a great show with good singers and talented crew, it makes you feel happy and sad very easily. After watching the first season, many popular songs that I already knew, simply felt different.

Everything about Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist was beautiful, engaging, and relatable. All actors/actresses correctly projected all the right emotions to allow the viewers to come along for their ride. Being that the two main aspects of the show are grief and love, it makes the show relatable to all. Whether you are a traditional musical fan or not, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is a beautiful production that can make you cry, but also laugh occassionally. The first season is worth your time, and makes it perfectly deserving of many more seasons!

I loved it! I've never seen anything like it before on TV. While I love music I am not a fan of musicals. This show incorporates the music in a way I like. Pretty much fell in love with Zoey and her family immediately. This show covers the joys and struggles in all aspects of life. Family, work, friends and love life. Do yourself a favour and at least check it out. It really is special.
