x's Review of The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight Rises(2012)
By shifting genres from crime epic to revolutionary war film, Christopher Nolan trades The Dark Knight's more focused narrative for broader scope, higher stakes and surging emotion. It's a superior piece of entertainment, brazen and gorgeous, smart and imaginative, consistently thrilling and supremely satisfying, with uniformly excellent performances and more ambition than any other comic book film so far. Like its predecessors, the film is impeccably crafted and explores themes - truth, despair, fear, hope - to bolster its philosophical perspective on heroism, and though they never entirely cohere, they make the film a richer experience. If The Dark Knight Rises doesn't quite muster the mysterious spark that gave its predecessor a ghostly shadow, it still takes a top tier franchise to awesome new places and makes the inevitable feel immensely rewarding.
