Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

Ok, this is a hard movie to rate, but since I've seen it I find myself liking it less and less. Don't get me wrong, there were definitely funny moments and I did laugh, but the guy beside me laughed at nearly everything... I must just not get it. I heard a review state that they thought Borat was on par with Monty Python. Umm, I can't even come close to that conclusion. It's just not right when you feel bad for the people in the movie that are being made fun of.

I guess Hollywood might be a little at fault here, so little has come out of there that is TRUE comedy in the last while that we have to resort to this Simple slapstick humour.

Or maybe I'm starting to get old :(

The Matador
The Matador(2006)

Pierce Brosnan as the anti-bond... Who would have guessed it. I saw this twice and both times it made me laugh. This is not the typical Brosnan as the suave, debonair jet-setter he has played many times in the past. Instead we find a troubled, broken, insecure man that needs a friend.

Very well done, I'd watch it again and I'll probably buy it.

Left Behind: World at War

Ok... I just read the other comments about this movie and I don't know what they were watching but yuck...

The short version of my comments here: Do NOT watch this movie. It is NOT entertaining and you will have wasted part of your life for having watched it.

Now for the long version. Where to start.
I picked this up due to, in part, the cover featuring planes and explosions etc, as well as the synopsis on the back of the box. I didn't know this was part of a series and to be honest I don't think that it would have mattered in my selection anyway.

The movie premise was good but the execution was seriously lacking. It felt like the director wanted to do too many things at once and in the end nothing was accomplished. There was no character development at all, I held no emotion for any of the charaters and when one of them died I simply didn't care, I just wanted it to end.

This was not a "particularly crisp and effective drama". It's comical and completely unbelievable. There are no explanations for the actions of the main characters save for "I'm doing God's Will". Yeah, uh huh, perhaps you should actually describe God's will, then the audience would know what is going on.

I have more to say about this movie, but I think that it's getting too long already.

Beowulf & Grendel

Couldn't sit through it. Although I was exhausted, perhaps I'll have to try to watch it again later.

V for Vendetta

Very well done, I found Hugo Weaving as V to be very good choice, however, over his past couple of movies (Lord of the Rings and Matrix) he has developed a speaking style that hasn't changed. Can he do something else with his voice other than monotone with the dramatic pause? I'm not a big Natalie Portman fan but she was excellent in her role as Evey. It was very political but it didn't matter as the action and intrigue was well balanced.

Ok, I watched this again and I take back what I said about Weaving. His performance was better then I remembered, especially when he first meets Evey. I would recommend watching this at least twice for some of the things that you might miss. The social commentary is more obvious on the second time around and I don't mean the blatant stuff with the chancellor. Watch it again, see what I mean...

The Truth About Cats & Dogs

Watched this on TV again the other day and remembered that I liked it. Garofalo is just plain funny and her sarcastic wit appeals to my sense of humour.

About 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the film however, I started to wonder why she just didn't suck it up and ask. But that wouldn't have made for a good movie I suppose.

All in all a faily enjoyable movie, good humour and generally upbeat. PLus if you like dogs, the Dane in this flick is fantastic.

Superman Returns

Yes! It was as good as I expected it to be. The special effects were seemlessly blended and outstanding.

Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel was an excellent choice. I feel that had they chosen someone with a name we would have gone in with certain expectations in the acting. However, with the unknown Routh in the part no assumptions were made and the film succeeds on it's own merits. Having said that, Routh played his part very well and he should work in nicely in Hollywood.

I truly enjoyed this movie and would have no problem going to watch it again in the theater. I'm sure they are already looking to make a sequel. I'll have to go see that as well.

Priceless, so many memorable lines and all of them funny.

"What? Like tha back of a Volkswagon?"

One of Kevin Smith's best movies.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Good, not great. The CGI was amazing and ILM should win something at the awards for their work on this. As for the music, I got tired of hearing the Hans Zimmer Standard Orchestration about 1/2 way through the film. Can't he write some music that doesn't share anything in common with any of his other scores? Sheesh, almost sounded like Gladiator...

Keira Knightley's part in this film was a bit weak, I'm not sure if it was the acting or the writing or the directing but there was something missing. As for Johnny Depp, well, true to form he pretty much carried the show. I can't think of a better actor for the part. After hearing that he patterned Jack Sparrow after Keith Richards it makes so much sense.

Waiting for the scene at the end of the credits was a waste of time though. DON'T WAIT FOR IT, IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!!

On the other hand, now I have to see PotC 3. Damn.

Lucky Number Slevin

Great flick, I should have guessed earlier what the outcome was going to be, but it presented me with too many options. Funny and clever all the way through, good writing. Favorite quote:

"You should play ball kid"
"Why? You think I'm tall enough?"

Good stuff, highly recommend.

There were many parallels in this movie to which I could relate from my own training with the exception of the boxing. I felt James Franco's performance was above average, although the sudden turn from "I'm alone and don't need no one" to "Hey I'm the biggest team player" was pretty abrupt. Everything else was pretty good.

... Well, I expected more from this cast. Julianne Moore went a little over the top on this one playing the whacked out mother.

There were a few things that bothered me as well. Like where that support group came from? How the heck were they at the hospital and followng the cop around BEFORE the kidnapping was even announced. Not to mention where the whole God thing came from... Felt sorta tacked on.

I didn't find it all that interesting, just another white vs. black movie in a long line. Felt longer than it was.

X-Men: The Last Stand

Well, it was not pretty darned good I'd say. Againt the "with great power comes great responsibilty" theme rears its head. I thought that was done to death in the Spiderman series. Also, what's with the same tired old "fear of people that are different" storyline? Didn't they do that for the first two? Shouldn't we move along to something like "Oh my god! There is a big bad enemy terrorising the country... We should call the X-Men".

Don't get me wrong, the old theme is not bad, however, we saw more than enough in X1 and X2.

As for characters... So many, so few explanations. I know they are making a Wolverine prequel, but we know more about him then colossus, or ArchAngel, or Kitty. Should we not develop those characters a little?

Besides all that, good action, fun to watch special effects and some great acting by the principals. Gotta go with 4.

Over the Hedge

Quite funny, more then a few places had me busting a gut. Not as good as Shrek and quite predictable (it is a kids film afterall...), but very entertaining. Maybe it was just me being subverted by the Shrek franchise, but I would have liked to have seen more witty adult humor.

Not terrible, not great. Pretty predictable but what do you expect from and action thriller? Why the explosion with the car at the end?

Compared to the others in this series it was great. As a war type movie, well... ok I suppose.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

Who wrote the awful dialog!! This thing only survives (for me) because of the special effects and the fight scenes.

Under Siege
Under Siege(1992)

Quite probably one of the only Steven Seagal movies that I enjoy.

The Thomas Crown Affair

Of most of my friends, I'm the only one that likes it. I thought it was really good.

The 13th Warrior

I still have to read the book of this one.

An instant classic. Is there anything Mike Myers can't do?

The Princess Bride

How can you not like this movie? It has action, adventure, pirates, drama... I mean, it has everything!

The Patriot
The Patriot(2000)

Some cool effects, I just don't care for the "Rah rah I'm American" movies.

Martin Lawrence Live - Runteldat

I didn't enjoy this. Can't quite figure out why I bought it. I might give it away as a gift to someone that likes this comedy.

Full Metal Jacket

What more is there to say about this one. A classic, all my sergeants keep wanting to imitate it though...

Friday Night Lights

Another fantastic sports movie.

Very funny, I really enjoyed seeing Duchovney in this role, as well, I don't think that I've ever seen Julianne Moore in a comedy. Well done.

Hrrm... What about this movie. I liked the interpretation of hell.

Arnie movie classic

Blues Brothers 2000

Nowhere near as good as the first, although the cop car crash scene is pretty good.

Billy Elliot
Billy Elliot(2000)

I couldn't say exactly why, but I really enjoyed this film.

Yours, Mine & Ours

Well, my fiance and I rented this... I wasn't impressed, are there actually people like this in the world? It makes me sad. Nothing special in this movie. Oh, and it's truly predictable.

Remember the Titans

Excellent, one of the best sports flicks I have seen. Truly inspirational, mind you, I love football so....

The Last Samurai

Yes, I really liked this movie. Which is remarkable since my enjoyment of Cruise has been lowering as of late. Ken Wantanabe is fantastic and (to me) was the very best part of this movie. Although again, what is with Cruise's hair?

Mission: Impossible 2

Not as good as 1, but not bad overall... Check out the motorcycle tires and how they keep changing from knobby to slick depending on what surface they are riding on.... Also, what is with Cruise's hair?

Mission: Impossible

All right, gotta suspend your disbelief of certain things, but whatever, that's what movies are for.

Batman Forever

What the heck happened? Get someone that isn't Tim Burton to direct and everything goes to hell in a handcart. I truly thought this was awful.

The original. I remember when this came out. Loved every minute of it. Even bought the soundtrack.

Batman Begins

Batman the way I always envisioned him. The only thing that I thought was odd was his vehicle. What happened to the traditional batmobile? Other than that, fan-freakin-tastic.

Batman & Robin

Bat nipples...... Need I saw more?

Batman Returns

Not as good as the first, but still pretty darned good. Keaton is a fantastic actor in both of em, too bad they didn't keep him.

We Were Soldiers

I enjoyed seeing the birth of the Air Calvary. It was nice to see the other side of the war a bit as well (the Vietnamese). What the Vietnamese General says at the end of the fight is a pretty powerful statement agianst the whole occupation in the first place. Good movie

Singin' in the Rain

I'm a big fan of Gene Kelly. Unfortunately I not a big fan of what they did to the "Good Morning" song by putting it to the Viagra commercials. But the movie is a good bit of fun with some great dancing and singing.

Excellent Epic. Kirk Douglas plays the excellent role of Spartacus. I highly recommend picking up the restored DVD and having a go at this one.

Top Gun
Top Gun(1986)

A classic, this was my first DVD so maybe it has a special place in my heart. It's got a couple of very imitatable lines "Maaverick!!!!!"

Great movie, fun to watch the stories intertwine.

The Life of David Gale

I don't know what the guy who reviewed this was smoking at the time he wrote it, but whatever it was he must have paid good money for it. I found this movie to be interesting all the way through, you think you know the result but it spins on you and you realise you could have figured it out but for the obvious hints. Well done.

The Green Mile

They could not have chosen better actors for this movie. I enjoyed the book tremendously and the movie didn't disappoint. If I could fix one thing it would be to make this DVD cheaper so that everyone can watch it!

Seven (Se7en)

Um, I know that I have seen this movie, but I can't remember all that much about it. I do know that I enjoyed it somewhat, althought I am not too fond of horrors. Still, It was interesting.

This came out a week before Titanic did, but very few people remember it because of the titanic amount of hype. Gruesome at times (on board ship), moving at others (courthouse). All done very well. For me this movie stood out far more than Titanic ever will.

The Game
The Game(1997)

This movie had me all screwed up from the get go. I truly enjoyed trying to figure out what the heck was going on and what was real and what wasn't. Good flick, unless you are impatient.

Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow

WORST MOVIE EVER, I am dumber for having watched it. Why couldn't they have ended 6 movies earlier.

Beautifully moving! No static characters in this movie. The differing perpectives done in different colours was a fantastic way to show the separate thoughts.

Fight Club
Fight Club(1999)

Great Movie! I never saw the ending coming, although when you watch it a few times you can see how it all works out. If I was allowed one movie on a deserted island I might even choose this one since there are many layers to watch that you don't see right away.

Memoirs of a Geisha

I did enjoy this very much, Ziyi Zhang has come a long way from when I first saw her in Rush Hour 2. And to think she is one year younger than me.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story

An excellent portrayal of Bruce Lee's life. It made me want to learn more about the man and the things that he did. I think that I am going to have to watch it again... Right now.

Excellently done, great use of visual, you can tell it used to be a stage play but it doesn't do anything to hinder the film medium. It's nice to see the stars showcase their talents (ie: singing and dancing) and not have some chorus type person do it instead.

Hotel Rwanda
Hotel Rwanda(2004)

Fantastic! It was powerful, moving, and just plain great.

The Shawshank Redemption

One of my favorite movies. Fantastic acting. It has that sense of redemption (<-- that is funny) that makes you feel so good at the end.

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown

Pretty good, Scrat was at his manic best and everyone loves watching animated martial arts, especially when it is done by a prehistoric squirel thing. I'd watch it again.

Not terrible, very children oriented, I was hoping for a little more Adult humour a la Shrek. But it was not to be.

Funny moments, needed more research into what actually happens. My job as a cook was funnier (and probably more stressfull) than this movie.

The Mask
The Mask(1994)

Good fun, Especially the mambo with the cops.

Army of Darkness

Bruce Campbell.... What more needs to be said?

Police Academy

Surprisingly funny, I might even watch it again which is more then I can say for the remainder of the franchise

As far as comic book adaptations go, this one survives.

X2: X-Men United

Not as good as 1, but bearable.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights

Freaking hilarious. Must see

Saving Private Ryan

Excellent movie. Love to watch it on full surround. Good stuff.

That's the way it is. Hurry up and wait, prepare for a long time to do something that never actually comes to pass. I was impressed.

The Legend of Zorro

Good sequel, action packed, fun to watch.

Funny moments, the trailer gives you pretty much all you need for that. You keep waiting for that one scene and then it lets you down. Not bad, not great.

Kept me wondering throughout. The end was a little disappointing, other than that, good flick.
