Movie Ratings and Reviews

The Nun's Story
½

Well, if you're interested in "a nun's story," this film tells you a lot about it. The story was about a nun's struggle with herself. I'd say it was "interesting" yet not quite fabulous.

Blue Hawaii
Blue Hawaii(1961)

Elvis has an irresistible voice. Angela Lansbury rocks. Other than that, pretty mediocre movie.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The worst of the HP films so far, in my opinion..

8 Women (8 Femmes)

Too scrumptious and delicious for words.

The Awful Truth
½

This amazing pair provides delightful entertainment! Old Hollywood is really the best with all its enchanting genres and actors to go along with them.

La Dolce Vita

Brilliantly Italian.

The Quiet Man

Four stars "professional rating" and five stars "sentimental rating"! I just loved this cute Irish country tale.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg)

Unique, moving... Jacques Demy is a genius.

Stella Dallas

This is an incredibly moving piece of work and includes remarkable performances by Barbara Stanwyck, Anne Shirley, and Barbara O'Neill.

Camille
Camille(1936)

A film that genuinely touched my heart. This film is capable of producing all kinds of emotions- sorrow, sympathy, and anxiety. Both Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor are beyond praise.

Sophie's Choice

A movie about love, hatred... good and evil. It will fill you with horror and beauty.

Separate Tables
½

Brilliantly written, along with great acting.

The Best Years of Our Lives

Not my favorite William Wyler film, but one of the good movies out there nonetheless =)

Waterloo Bridge

I've always had a tendency to feel tremendous sympathy for women in Myra's position, and so this film kept me at the edge of my seat all throughout, leading me to watch with anxiety every action and decision of Myra. As an honest woman, she could not deceive, and she could and get rid of the overwhelming sense of guilt, and if you can understand that you can understand this film. This is the exact sort of film that, while it may not lead you to shed tears, it may very well evoke in you a sense of extreme sadness and sorrow.

Love Affair
Love Affair(1939)

I thought "An Affair to Remember" was good. But this is great! It's so appalling that Irene Dunne never got an Oscar in her lifetime.

Rebecca
Rebecca(1940)
½

Many talented actresses wanted this role, but Miss Fontaine blew me away... and so did Sir Laurence Olivier.

The Holiday
The Holiday(2006)
½

Kate & Jack's story was beautiful... Jude & Cameron's story was alright.

Twentieth Century
½

The two were incredibly funny... I've also seen bloopers for this film, and they're quite entertaining as well!

Christmas in Connecticut
½

Highly recommended Christmas film :)

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers
½

"When she was bad, she was great."

Clash by Night

This film contains one of my favorite scenes of Miss Stanwyck's entire career. Otherwise it's a "fair" film.

The Lady Eve
The Lady Eve(1941)

Quite possibly my favorite screwball comedy of all time!

Sorry, Wrong Number

Wasn't too fond of the story, but Miss Stanwyck is simply fantastic...

Fire Over England

Not such an interesting plot... I think this movie would have done better if it wasn't done in such a light manner. Olivier is the best thing about this film.

Platinum Blonde

Not my favorite Capra film, but this was Harlow at her "blondest!"

The Stranger
The Stranger(1946)

It's Orson Welles and Loretta Young... what more can you say? ;) I've always liked Welles' directing style and he's a fabulous actor as well.

Of Human Bondage

The movie was such bad quality that I couldn't even read the letters shown on screen! I hope I'll get to see a better quality sometime... but even within this limited circumstance, Bette Davis was Bette Davis!

42nd Street
42nd Street(1933)
½

I wasn't particularly interested by the story itself, but the songs were likable and I liked Dorothy's voice. First time seeing Ginger Rogers too... she was funny as Anytime Annie.

The Jazz Singer
½

I was surprised by the usage of the synchronous sound. There was even a little part in the movie where conversation was recorded along with the song. This is a must for any student interested in Film Studies.

The Barefoot Contessa
½

I was surprised that I could identify with the contessa. Very deep and emotional.

A Streetcar Named Desire

This is the movie that opened my eyes to Vivien Leigh's talent as well as that of Marlon Brando. Before this movie, Leigh's image had been so stuck on Scarlett O'Hara for me that I was shocked when I saw her as a crushed Blanche. This is another one of the film adaptations of Tennessee Williams' plays and not surprisingly, deals with the mind. Personally for me, the fact that Leigh was indeed Blanche made it all the more interesting as well as more sorrowful and astonishing. This was heightened by the fact that Brando acted out his part amazingly as the anti-sympathetic and aggressive abuser.

Gone With the Wind

Just watched this movie again after diving into the book. Although the book obviously has more details and more characters that are interesting regardless of their relatively small role in the story, the movie obviously was the best that could come out of such a masterpiece! And I personally think that this was one case in which there could never be a remake or a different cast, because Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable were just P-E-R-F-E-C-T in their respective roles as Scarlett and Rhett. It's undoubtedly one of the best casting I've ever seen.

Bringing Up Baby
½

Absolutely hilarious! The funniest thing I ever saw. One thing you should keep in mind though while watching this is that you will be required to keep up with the rapid talk of Hepburn as well as with the chaotic and deafeningly noisy dialogues and scenes ;)

The Thin Man
The Thin Man(1934)
½

Nick and Nora are the best married couple on screen ;) The Thin Man series is made extremely lovable because of the fact that it includes a variety of genres - mystery, comedy, drama, suspense, etc - but the series is unique because of that fact that, while the storyline revolves around the crimes, the entire movie is characterized by the characters of Nick and Nora, the perfect couple.

Meet Me In St. Louis
½

Good cast and cheerful songs!

Trust the Man

Pretty good cast.. the ending was touching :)

Madame Bovary

I like the book inifnitely more, but it was very nice actually hearing the story in French.

The Wings of Eagles

Worth watching, but I didn't think it was particularly interesting because navy stories aren't exactly my cup of tea ;)

Only the Lonely

Worth watching if just for the sake of watching Maureen O'Hara. The story itself is not too bad, but unoriginal.

An American in Paris

It wasn't my kind of musical, but you see a lot of dancing and colorful costumes/sets in this movie.

Mildred Pierce

A very worthwhile suspense film.

Grand Hotel
Grand Hotel(1932)

Certainly not your usual cup of tea. I tend to like a film about many characters intertwined in some way, and this was one such movie. I have to say though, that I think the star-studded cast contributed greatly to the success of this film. After all, it IS a fabulous cast.

Queen Christina
½

Garbo's presence is astounding as Queen of Sweden. Although highly fictional, this movie will satisfy both hopeless romantics and movie critics alike. Personally though, I prefer Camille :P

The Country Girl
½

Great acting by Grace Kelly. An intriguing story.

Dream Wife
Dream Wife(1953)

Quite predictable, yet has plenty of humor. Not a waste of time.

Ninotchka
Ninotchka(1939)

I love this movie! Ninotchka was so hilarious in the beginning, and towards the end, became as sweet as sugar.

How to Steal a Million
½

The way they "stole a million" was truly brilliant.

The Children's Hour
½

An intense, well directed piece dealing with a controversial issue at the time. Terrific acting my Miss Hepburn and Miss MacLaine. I just have to add, I love Wyler's directing style.

His Girl Friday

Cary Grant is an awesome actor!

The Long Gray Line
½

Reminded me of The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.. it was alright. (Please excuse my lack of eloquence today lol)

Jamaica Inn
Jamaica Inn(1939)

Comme-ci comme ca.

To the Shores of Tripoli
½

Mmm. Interesting enough.

Marvelous. I remember seeing bits of this as a kid!

McLintock!
McLintock!(1963)

What can I say? It's Duke and Maureen!

Adam's Rib
Adam's Rib(1949)
½

It was funny and entertaining, but I liked Woman of the Year better!

Intolerable Cruelty

Amusing.. I like these kinds of characters, but this movie is more of an eye candy than a work of art.

City of Angels
½

It was lovely, but I was able to see what was coming.

The Innocents
½

I don't like horror movies but I took the risk. Well, this seemed more like a psychological thriller although not quite, and I have to say I enjoyed it. But I don't like such abrupt endings.

A Prairie Home Companion

A great cast, and a unique movie. It was funny and I enjoyed it very much.. Altman's overlapping dialogue is much to my taste.

Giant
Giant(1956)
½

Wow.. this movie sure is some eye candy! The story itself is pleasant enough to watch too :)

Monster House
½

I guess this movie's not for me.. but the idea was pretty good.

Three Colors: Blue (Trois Couleurs: Bleu)

So I was watching this movie, and halfway throughout the subtitles disappeared. And my French wasn't sufficient enough to pick up the vital phrases.. well, I'll just have to give it an average rating for now! x(

Miracle on 34th Street

The characters in this original version were more well developed, and I like that.

The Last Time I Saw Paris

Hmm.. I knew right away in the beginning what would happen in the story. But it was still beautiful and sad.

Little Women
Little Women(1933)
½

Although this was the original, I think I prefer the 1949 remake in general. But that's mostly because of the color and costumes. This one was slightly more detailed.

A Place in the Sun
½

Heartwrenching story of love and truth.

Long Day's Journey Into Night

Brilliant screenplay, brilliant performances.. but there was one scene I thought was too long.

Charade
Charade(1963)

Excellent twist! Great plot.

The Ant Bully

Nothing new, story wise.. not really. Interesting enough, though.

On the Beach
On the Beach(1959)

Hmm.. the atomic bomb story didn't really create a sense of horror.. didn't really get me to think about it all that much.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
½

Hmm, how weird. I never read the actual book so I never knew how the story actually really went, and I always "believed" in the Disney version, lol. Now I'm gonna visit sparknotes to see which one's right.. in any case, I enjoyed this film very much.

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Another great psychological thriller, with a marvelous performance by Miss Davis.

The African Queen
½

I liked seeing Bogart in this kind of role.. and the innocent romance was sweet.

Suddenly, Last Summer

A movie dealing with insanity always catches my attention. This one was horrible, interesting.. and was a kind of a suspense film. I liked it.

Butterfield 8
½

Didn't like the ending.. but until then it was alright.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Warm and loving.. and right out in the open! Marvelous performance by the Tracy/Hepburn couple.

Rear Window
Rear Window(1954)
½

I'm not much into suspense movies.. but people say this is one of Hitchcock's best..

Down (The Shaft)

Why was Naomi Watts in so many horror movies? Damn it lol

The Assassination of Richard Nixon

I hate Samuel Bicke, and this is a totally opinionated rating. ;)

Mulholland Drive
½

If I had to choose one David Lynch film to watch, I would choose this hands down. This movie asks a lot of questions without ever clearly answering them, and opens doors for viewers to think and meditate on the abundant symbolism in the picture.

Honey
Honey(2003)
½

If you like dancing, this is the movie to see.

Sweet November

Sweet like the title.

The Brothers Grimm

A strange fairy tale which I happen to like very much.

The Family Stone
½

Sort of reminded me of Love Actually, but was much less profound.

The Golden Bowl

Might as well have been set in the contemporary world.
