Cath's Review of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Despite a great central performance from Martin Freeman, perfect as the fuddy-duddy Bilbo, The Hobbit part 1 is just much, much too long. Bilbo heads off on a quest with a bunch of largely unmemorable dwarves and Gandalf, battling grotesque but dull orcs. Can someone explain the motivation of the orcs? All they appear to want out of life is to kill and look mean. Far too many shots of CGI orcs and dwarves in massive battles for me.
By far the best parts of the film are those with Martin Freeman, the best scene by far, the Bilbo/Gollum riddles in the dark scene. Apart from that, this 2 and three quarter hour film drags badly unless you are a Tolkein fanatic.
