Sean's Review of The Book of Eli
The Book of Eli(2010)
This is one of the more pleasant surprises I've run into in quite some time. On paper this sounded like gold, but the trailers just didn't excite me. Having seen the film, I now understand that the trailer editors were trying to play down the Western elements and make it feel more like a generic action movie. I like post apocalypse movies, but the integration of the Western genre really worked for me. There isn't an extensive amount of action, but what there is is very well done. Obviously Denzel Washington is very good, and he sells some of the more corny elements of his character. There is a silly twist, but I didn't see it coming, and it didn't bother me. In fact, I kind of liked it. There is a bit too much product placement and a few too many shots of Denzel walking towards the camera in slow motion, but these were minor distractions in a very enjoyable movie.
