Independence Day: Resurgence
12 months ago via Rotten Tomatoes

Dull all the way through with an all too long runtime. The SFX are updated but that is all that seemed any interest in developing. As good as Jeff Goldblum is he sure can't save this overlong mess. It also has the audacity to blatantly set up a sequel.

Jason Bourne
Jason Bourne (2016)

Better than Legacy but lesser than the other three Damon starrers. A subplot about the current state of security versus freedom feels tacked on and unnecessary filling. The action is as usual top notch, although some seem truncated. Ending seems to point to more sequels, which begs the question: are more needed, probably not.

Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad (2016)

First half is told well but the other is purely action driven and cliched and goes by the numbers. Each minor character barely get moments to showcase themselves, particularly Killer Croc and Katana who feel like plotdevices. The Joker is lurking around and is highly entertaining an8d almost seemed to be a remix of other versions of the cruel and gleeful killer clown. Batman gets a cameo as plotdevice but I guess this was expected. Harley Quinn is very much like she had jumped out of the comics and is fun. Will Smith as Deadshot, like he always does, he feels like a softie when he isnt pulling the trigger on someone. Suicide Squad is yet another mediocre to servicable comicbook movie, bit of a letdown.

Star Trek Beyond

A solid entry into the franchise, Justin Lin has made a Star Trek ensemble piece that works real well. The movie goes back to the roots with discoveries of new...frontiers. All actors deliver good performances, especially Karl Urban brings a sense of levity as the cynical doctor. This is one of the biggest surprises of the year so far. Well worth a look.
