All the CGI and FX are kind of a turn-off, but I *must* see it because of the cast, namely Michael Sheen and Alan Rickman as my two favorite characters, even if all we "see" of them is their amazing voices.
As a vampire connoisseur, I had no interest in this sappy teen schlockfest until I learned that Michael Sheen would be in it and the reviewers (namely Michael Philips and A. O. Smith from "At the Movies") both gave it a thumbs-up--I mean "See it," on the basis that it wasn't nearly as bad as the book. Well, the book must be utterly unreadable because I found myself wanting to fast-forward through most of this dreary film. The colors are dreary, the acting is dreary, and the story is dreary, not only promoting suicidal behavior as a valid means of getting attention but making me wonder what the two dreary male leads (coincidentally *both* reluctant supernatural monsters) saw in the dreary heroine. (Not to mention ... a vampire film without a single fang in sight???) The Volturi scenes were the only time the film came to life (what it lacks in the usual vampire trappings, it more than makes up for in violence), and the trailer would lead you to believe these fearsome vampire leaders were a major part of the film (at least providing for the most lively footage), but, except for an early flashback/teaser, come too late in the film and are not in it long enough (about five minutes in all) to save the night. Michael Sheen masterfully chews up and spits out the scenery to the point where his diabolically beneficent Aro is the only character I wanted to see with Bella, if only to shake some life into her mopey head! But if, like me, Michael Sheen is your reason for seeing this (and/or you're a grown-up), save your time and your money. You can see most of his performance in the trailer and wait to rent the DVD so you can skip straight to his scenes. (Did I mention this is deadly dull, predictable, and DREARY?!!! And, OMG, the ending ... don't tell me that's going to be the basis for the sequel! And that Michael Sheen is going to make me see that one too!!! I think I'd rather drive a motorcycle off a seacliff.)
